NOOB (dumb question) - Thermostat Installation

Ugh. In my never ending quest for heat I'm reinstalling my thermostat l, in case I put it in backwards.

Quick overview. New Heater Core, Blower working fine, new Thermostat, still no heat. Before I buy ANOTHER new part (water pump), I'm hoping this might work.

I've taken a pic, is this the correct way the thermostat goes in?

Do the springs face toward the motor or toward the radiator?

And yes, I have a manual on the way, hahaha. But I've got this apart now and need some dang heat! Lol

Sometimes the thermostate has the position stamped on it. I.E. "Engine Side" or "up" ..... the spring goes toward the engine.

Do a Google search for Jeep thermostate install. There are a bunch of youtube videos and written amterial on the subject.

For what it is worth, filling a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with coolant is not as easy as it should be. there is a good chance that you have an air bubble in the heater core which will not let water circulate freely. You may want to pull the top hose from the core to be sure it is full and/or pull the heat sending unit on the back or the head to "burp" the cooling system.

I have always thought it strange that the CJ is the only heat coil I have ever worked with that did not have a control valve.

I tried burping it last week, nothing. While it was running I pulled off, one at a time, the top and lower hoses. Coolant flowed fine.

I ordered a new Water Pump today ($13). Some people had suggested it in aanother thread, although Iddon't see how that could work but I'm willing to try anything at this point.

The frustrations of working on cars is quite overwhelming. I'm a motorcycle Guy and MUCH prefer to rebuild a sportster Transmission then <-BAD WORD-> with this thing.

Anyone have a motorcycle to trade? Lol

"Pinkie", not cool. I've got a few hundred thousand miles on motorcycles. There is nothing "Pinkie" about a CJ Jeep. I actually sold my unreliable oil dripping Shovelhead to purchase my Jeep. Good luck getting heat into your Jeep.

Was trying to put "<-BAD WORD-> with this thing" but it changed it to "pinkie". Hahahahaha

Was messing around with the Jeep the other day, letting it run for a good half hour. Decided I'd try and "burp" the system once more. Pulled off the bottom hose, nothing flowed, the top was the same. I held the hose, off the Water Pump, below it's level on the motor and scolding water flowed. So I'm guessing a new Water Pump will do the trick. I ordered it up the other day and should be here next week. Fingers crossed it'll work.

I also had a local shop tell me I needed a Steering Gear rebuild, while they were NOT giving me an inspection sticker. Well, I looked at it yesterday, and it was leaking due to a loose hose clamp! Makes me wonder if they even bothered to look at it, or just saw a puddle on their floor and assumed it needed a rebuild.

I tightened it all up, let her run a while, no leak. Go figure.
