So I am trying to clean up under the hood and have reached the point of vacuum lines and hoses… figured that I would see about correcting the issues or stripping what is not needed as most of the system is disconnected. Problem I am having is that the Nutter bypass is the only thing I am finding about stripping out the unnecessary junk but it is specifically for 82-86 with the stepper BBD and ECU and 1980 falls into a half step between no real emission stuff and a :dung: ton of it. Does anyone have any good diagrams or info on what is necessary in this stepchild of a system?
Thanks,
Tony

The '80 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l does not have a computer controlled carb and ignition as do the later Jeeps. I would suggest you look into the "Team Rush" upgrade for the distributor.

You need to decide what you really want to keep as far as emissions go on the Jeep. IF you want to go old school basic you need 3 vacuum lines. DIstributor, PVC and brake booster. If you want to keep your vapor canister then you need a bunch more.

I pulled all my sensors and computer :dung: from my intake and put plugs in so I would definately know that there were no vacuum leaks.

Torxhead, I am probably using bad terminology… the reason I reference the Nutter is that stripping the vacuum system seems to go hand in hand with getting rid of the computer. I’ve thought about the doing the Team Rush upgrade or just going to a DUI but I don’t have any ignition problems at the moment with the stock setup so I am not too worried about it.
Jimbo, Right now the system is pretty stripped down, the only connections that I can see are still made are the distributor, brake booster, and one to the vapor canister. No PVC that I can find and a bunch of other hoses still mucking about but not hooked up at both ends.
Thanks,
Tony

You will need to hook up the PVC system. If not you run the chance of blowing oil out of your valve cover. Is there any other lines coming from you vapor canister? If not pull the line from your vacuum canister and plug it where it hooks into the system or manifold.

Guess I should go and pick a PCV and some hose/fittings up then. As far as I can figure out from the diagrams the PCV wants to be in series with the “Can Purge” on the canister… correct?
Right now the evap canister has two lines that go back to the carb hooked up; the “Card bowl vent” and Can Purge”. The “to fuel tank” is not attached; however the tube is there, just broken off a little short, so I will be hooking that back up. And the "Purge Sig" (what ever that is) is not connected to anything.
Thanks,
Tony

On my carb the PVC hooks into a big nipple on the back of the carb.. I havent hooked one up to the stock system in for ever so In not quite sure where it goes. If your vapor can is not hooked I would try to route the PVC to some place else.. there is so many places the vacuum can can leak from that it becomes a PITA to hook up unless you run all new hose and know its right.

I was wrong the PCV is actually hooked up to a large T that has a hose going to the canister and leg to the carb under the air cleaner; the hose comes around under the air cleaner and I lost track of it until I pulled the air cleaner for a better look.
That leaves me with the “Purge Sig” open on the canister… other than just capping it off any suggestions?
Thanks,
Tony

Here's where I bow out to emission knowledgable folk. If there is no vacuum coming from the purge signal port on the canister I would look for where the line that belongs there is. If its not capped it will be a open vacuum leak. That's the biggest pita with these jeeps is cleaning up after some shade tree mechanic "fixes" em.

Yup, that’s the kind of stuff I am chasing around. Some of it is just disconnected and other stuff is MIA which is why I am wondering what to strip and what to replace. So far the simplest stripped down diagram that I have found is here: http://keith.cj8.tripod.com/cj_vacuum_diagram_modified.htm so I am trying to work with that.
Thank,
Tony

tony, wondering how this worked out for you.? I have a mess of vacuum lines, most of them disconnected or melted in half...
