I have small leak on my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l but can’t tell where from. Replaced valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket new oil sending unit. All seem good. The leak seems to be near the front of the engine but it blows back so you can’t tell where it’s coming from. Always find oil on bottom of fuel pump. Very small leak. A few drops a week. Any thoughts on how to determine origin of leak.

A few drops is nut'n to fuss with.
You sure your PCV valve is clean?

A few drops? (Please post what a few drops are.)

When was the last gasket / engine rebuild?

Again... just a few drops are OK.

Check at the base of the distributor too. I've heard of folks losing oil from there.

A few drips here and there are no big deal on these old engines...unless you need to keep the floor/driveway spotless. In which case, you'll be chasing leaks for the rest of your life!

I’ll check the PCV as well as the other rubber grommets in the cast aluminum valve cover but the valve cover is pretty dry.

I get 3 or 4 drops of oil on the floor a week. I know that’s nothing for an old engine. The engine has about 62k since rebuild.

I wondered about the distributor but is there a gasket for that? Not to my knowledge. Am I missing something?

I would give a hug to anyone with an engine with 62k since a rebuild and only 3 or 4 drops a week. For me that is call for piece of cardboard under the leak... :chug:

Some do, some don't. Depends on manufacturer.

If my memory servers me right, There's an O ring on the distributor. I haven't had one out in a while.

Okay, I’m a little anal about it.

I have a DUI EFI distributor but I didn’t install it. I’m reluctant to touch it since it runs so good. 1/16th -1/32nd makes a big difference.

I meant to HEI.

Do a dye test. It will show up.

For some quick understanding you can go to youtube and search for oil dye test and you'll get the idea. eBay sells 'em, most likely the local auto parts store also. Nope you don't have to change the oil afterwards.
