Hey guys, I had an axle seal leak, so I thought it was a good time to swap my 2 -piece to 1 piece shafts. The instructions say to remove the hub from the shaft, and use the axle shaft on one side to push out the axle shaft on the other side. I am stuck on the taking off the hub part. I put a large puller on the hub after taking off the nut, but I can't get it to budge. I've tried heating it (only have propane - nothing stronger) and giving it love taps with a heavy hammer, but I can't break it loose.

Any tips? Is there a way to remove the 2 piece shaft without taking off the hub?

It is a stock AMC20 . Based on the the stamp, I believe it has a trac-loc.

Thanks for any help!

The shafts can be removed with the hubs still attached. Removing the hubs will make it easier to get to the retaining bolts and will allow the brake backing plate to be removed. The last couple 1 piece installs I did, I pulled the 2 piece shafts with hubs attached because we had extra backing plates. I can't remember if the backing plate can be removed from the 2 piece shaft by removing the wheel bearing.

Take a BFH and HIT(BEAT) the outside edge of the hub while you have the puller under heavy strain.

Yes, just cut the cage and remove the roller bearings.

To remove axle and hub as a unit, unbolt the backing plate, place a pry bar behind the plate at the axle flange and very gently pry while hitting hub outward whit a large hammer. Best done as a 2 man job. One prying and the other swinging the hammer. Don't pry too hard or you will distort the brake backing plate.

Bass-Don't forget to disconnect the P'bake cable and brake line. ;)

Easy to forget too-Ask me how I know.
