The oil from the Transmission goes into the Transfer Case , but does not return to the transmission. The transfer case is overfull, the transmission is low. The result is a leak from the speedo cable.

Replace aft seal on tranny.
Common issue.
Make sure tranny vent isn't plugged.

The vent is not plugged. My plan is to install a sealed rear bearing on the Transmission and plug the little holes on the back of the trans so the gear oil will be isolated to each unit

That is the way I remember curing the problem. Both of my T-14 do not have the sealed bearing and it's a pita having the Transfer Case over filled.
No such thing as a rear seal on Transmission .They came with a open unshielded bearing. Installing the sealed bearing was the cure. Post the bearing number when you get it if you would. thanks, mike:)

I'd be worried about plugged up pasaageways between the tranfercase and the Transmission . I've got the T-15 , T-20 combo and I can't say as I've ever had an oil build up problem.

i believe this is particular to the dana 18 Transfer Case .no oil passage
holes.the oil migrates from Transmission to transfer case via the rear mainshaft
ball bearing that is not sealed.this has been a common problem since day one.
after the oil level gets above the speedo-cable attachment it leaks from cable housing.the only way to prevent the overfill is a sealed bearing.not sure what configuration the op has,but he stated it had a warn-Overdrive .btw i modified my speedo gear/shaft with a valve stem seal so it does not leak there any
longer.if you keep topping off the transmission it will eventually find a stable level.if someone has info to add pertaining to a dana 18 i welcome there comments.:):) mike

Thanks guys for all the input
