I am always amazed when I bring a new project home to see some of the P.O.s attempts at repairs/ modifications. The first thing I always do is search these out and get rid of them.

For some reason this Jeep is ultra grounded. Here's one where he used an old extension cord and had it wrapped around a battery tray bolt. It didn't go anywhere so I don't know what it was supposed to do.

Here's more quality electrical work. He used a wire cap to splice this. I am not sure why:

The choke tube is missing so the choke is wired off. I'll need to fix that.

I said before this Jeep is grounded like crazy. Here he used a tailgate cable from the head to the brake master cylinder. Since you usually buy those in pairs there is another one from the alternator mount to the frame.

Why, oh why would you use a torch to cut a giant hole for an antenna? For pete's sake. There's a matching hole on the other side.

A quick fix to a broken radiator overflow tank. I am not sure if this is the correct tank.

Gotta have speakers. There's a matching hole on the other side. 111613133658_zps222ff85e.webp

There's also a rear bumper that looks like it was welded to the frame and a rats nest of wiring.
Wish me luck.

Wow…how much did he pay you to take this off his hands? :D I love finding stuff like that. I guess I kinda got lucky, though. The only PO "mod" I found before I ripped my CJ to shreds was when he "cleaned up" the wiring by removing (presumably) un-needed wiring (at least from the engine end) and tying them all in a rat's nest fashion to the grille brace bar. There was also come crappy quality body work, but I think that was actually from the P-PO.

I love the tailgate cable grounding straps.

I bet I am just as guilty for some of the jeeps I have owned and sold. I definitely can think of some fixes I did in my early jeep days that probably would leave me scratching my head now.

:laugh: at least most of them are easy to get rid of :chug:

Most of that stuff comes from "Lack of" Lack of proper tools and Lack of know how. I'm still trying to figure out how he cut out the speaker hole. Did he drill all the holes? and then cut it out? I too would be very ashamed to see what I might have done 30+ years ago.

agreed..looks like the alternator made need some adjustment too..fan belt looks cocked

I'm guilty of that too. You do some stupid stuff when you are 16, unsupervised and you have a power tools or a welder at your disposal.
It looks like the speaker grills were there already and he just cut out the holes to put a speaker in from the front. Weird.

I ran into these today on my 60 CJ5 . This heading to the heater core. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Willys didn't use galvanized pipe fittings.

And this off the other side of the heater core. Pretty nice job sweating pipe, but probably no part number on this one either.

I remember those days... Make it run we'll fix it later.

I just noticed that, after posting, then going out to the garage and seeing my speaker grill in the dash............:o

The PO of mine did the exact same thing to the speaker grilles only not that neat. I was afraid of getting tetnus from my dash.

I had a stop sign for a floor pan on the passenger side and A piece of oil field drill pipe for front bumper on my CJ when I bought it.

Here's an odd one. On the rear end, there are coil springs on top of the leaf springs.

Overload springs. Used to be able to buy them. Probably still can.

Ah, mystery solved. I don't know what the heck you could fit in the cargo area that would be that heavy. Except maybe a couple of my buddies and a keg of beer. Same guys I bring on my wakeboard boat for ballast.

My '69 was used in agriculture and had a sprayer setup with tank in the back.Very heavy. When I became the owner it still had brackets welded to frame for spray arms and coil over loads welded to top of axle housing.Amazing what these old cj's where used for back in the day.In my area the hop farmers used jeeps to tow the hop wagons from the field to the drying barn. :) mike s.

We are still finding little "gifts" from the PO.

We could not figure out why the amc key blanks we bought would not work. When the key and cylinder basically fell out we learned it was from a GM vehicle. Of course the key stamped GM should have been my first clue.

Replacing the light switch we saw where the PO had re-engineered the connections using the aformentioned household wire nuts again

I am assuming there is supposed to be a plug that goes there rather than the individual wires?

Oh and the back seat has these wire clamps. Not sure why...

I'm sure we'll find more...
