I'm sure there will be all kinds of debate here but I am doing a frame up on my 7. AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l -6 and being built for a good balance of on and off road. 4" lift with 33's.

I have a T-176 / 300 and a T-18 -B / 20....What would you all run?

I was going to run the 18/20 but having some second thoughts. I'm just not sure now so I thought I would throw it out there.
 
:wtf: well the T-18 is the most coveted for its strength and low gear great for off road and the T-176 is not as strong nor does it have nearly the low gear, I would ask first do you need the super low gear?
 
I've had 2 CJs with T18s. I love them. For off-roading they are easily the best Transmission the factory has ever installed. It's a truck Transmission and it shifts as such. If you plan on doing much off-roading it's an easy decision. Use the T-18 .

On the other hand if you don't off-road and the jeep will stay on the street most the time you can use the T-176 . It has smoother shifting and all 4 gears can be used on the street. It's a good Transmission but not the heavy duty truck Transmission that the T-18 is.

I will do a fair amount of off-roading. I have run both trannys before and do like the T-18 . My ideal situation would be to keep the 18 and buy an adapter to hang my 300 on the back but it's just not in the bugdet right now.
 
For a Jeep that will see a lot of street duty, I would go with the T-176 . I have one and its great for driving around on the road. I have two buddies with T-18s. Their jeeps do much better in the woods than mine. But, I will be going with a 4:1 gear in the Dana 300 . Best of both worlds. I know the T-18 is stronger, but my T-176 is just fine for my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and 33s.

The T-18 -B is the close ratio. Not the T-18 -A wide ratio (i.e. super low first)
 
Stupid question bu you do have the CJ length T-18b not the waggy or J truck T-18 -b right?

Well to be honest I really don't know. I drove the Jeep home with it but the belly pan had been hacked and cut. Weren't the input shafts different on the Waggy's?
This tranny has never been opened up. So I am inclined to believe that it is a CJ or possibly Ford.

How do I tell? Not that it really matters though because I am fabricating a new skid plate. I have some pics in my build of the skid plate. You can get a couple descent views there.

If your going to spend a fair amount of time off road and can work on other areas of the Cj while saving for the adapter do it. Then when you want to get really crazy later you can add the 4 to 1 kit for the Dana 300 . :D

My point is if you can hold onto the 300 do it. This is all based on a rock crawling type of attitude by the way. Depending on what type of trails your going to run you may be better off with the T-176 / 300 combo. The T-18 is definately a stronger Transmission but if you dont want the low crawl ratio that combo is pretty stout behind the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l especially.

No problems keeping a 300. I have 3 of them.

I would say that I do moderate rocking. The problem I have is I live in the Indiana flat lands and it is several hour to do any. So in order for me to enjoy my CJ on a somewhat daily basis it has to be streetable too. :(
