Now, I'm sure there's a thread on this out there somewhere but I can't find it.

I've been thinking about upgrading from the lackluster stock MS to a diaphragm booster / bigger MS setup. I've still got drums all the way around but eventually, plan on upgrading to four discs. But, since I'm not ready to shell out the money for discs yet and I've already got the new booster and MS, I figured installing now would help my stopping power with the current drums...

My question is; will I need to relocate the proportioning valve from the frame and mount it right up by the MS or, can I just leave it where it is for the time being?

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the brake / clutch pedal overhang bracket for manual brakes is different from power ones on account of being able to accommodate the 4 mounting bolts for the booster instead of 2 for just a lone MS setup. Because I'm impatient and don't feel like searching for the other bracket, will I run into issues just mounting it the way it is? I know the bolts for the old mount would interfere with the new booster bracket but, I'm not above just drilling out holes on the booster bracket and using those as an extra mounting point in addition to the four that are there... Just wondering if for some strange reason this would be a bad idea.

Thanks

I believe the valve is different, AND the OE location for disc/drum setups is on the frame...FWIW.

You can find the valve here...Brakes

Thanks! Do you know if the valve is different to accommodate disc brake or to accommodate the new booster and MS? I plan on running it on drum brakes all the way around for the time being .. If I don't need it now, I'll just upgrade when I pony up for discs all the way around.

Not sure honestly. If I were to guess it would have to do more disc vs drum but I won't swear to it

If you're going to swap to disc you'll need to swap the proportioning valve to valve metered for the disc brakes.

Something like this will come with the correct valve installed on the side of the MC you would just need to bypass the existing PV.

Right so I've already got a kit like this from previous owner who never installed it. Has the mounting bracket for the valve, just no valve. I think he never installed it because of issues mounting it to the firewall. If I'm not mistaken, the overhanging bracket for brake / clutch pedal that bolts go through is different for power brakes to accommodate four bolts through the firewall instead of two.

That I'm not sure about, I have a 81 automatic and that kit I linked was literally plug and play. I only had to adjust the brake rod run, add vacuum line, and bleed the brakes.

not sure if the pedal bracket on yours is the same as mine but if you have the room to drill it go ahead and drill it for the booster and use your new holes to mount everything leaving the old MC holes open. Also see if your current MC will bolt up to the booster so you dont have to worry about weather or not the new MC is the correct one for drums, keep your stock proportioning valve as is, GM not Jeep is the one that came up with the idea of putting it next to the MC which is not necessary.

I attached some pictures of my setup they might be helpful.

I used my stock P.V. because I just stuck with the Disc/Drum setup, but like I said if you're going to change to disc/disc when you plumbing the lines to the new setup you can run the new lines to where ever you choose to place your P.V.

So I've got it all mounted up. Took the quick and easy route and just drilled a few extra holes where it was needed. Not the prettiest but it'll work.

Now, the vacuum line for the booster..... So I've got the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , intake manifold is drivers side with what appears to be a vacuum port right under the carb. Would that be the right place to run it?

Yes, it should be the same size as the one on the booster.
