Is $400 to much for a T-18 in good working condition. And what if any adapters do I need to fit to a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and Dana 300 ?:) Also how do I tell if it is the low ratio 6.32 what #'s do I need to be looking for and where. Thanks

400 seems high to me even with regional price differences. I paid 25 for mine and I only have to change the spline (out of a j-truck).

, thats insane. I should start buying them here and send them east .

Even with swapping the spline it wouldn't cost that much.

25 is unusually cheap for any tranny. $400 is a fair price if it is a CJ T18a (6.32 1st). I have seen that version sell for twice that. FSJ versions can be found for $100 around here.

OP: If it the 6.32 I personally would save a couple of bucks and run a Dana 20 . That first gear more than makes up for the low range Transfer Case change.

By "spline" I assume you mean the input shaft? Can you tell me your source and price for the correct CJ input shaft/retainer? Novak used to list them on their site but they are no longer listed even if the part # of T-18 -ISK is mentioned. Probably available by emailing them but I don't know if I want to bother them if I am not actually going to buy...

Borg Warner Ford & Jeep versions....you can put it in Low Gear and if you can turn the input shaft and count the turns of input versus output........ one will be 6:1 the other 4:1.

I like to take the top cover off and you'll see why below........the input shaft teeth are 17 for a 6:32 & 23 for a 4:1 ...........it is hard to convert a 4:1 to a 6:32 as finding all the components may not be available ..........at the very least a correct input shaft and a new counter shaft and perhaps 1 other sliding gear would be needed and may not be worth the cost.

The Ford version input shaft is 10 spline 1-1/16" while the Jeep version was 10x 1-1/8"
Ford version right side PTO......Jeep is Left side.

Neither Ford or Jeep has a syncro in Low gear..........do to that fact some of the used Transmissions can be pretty will beat up internally because of that fact..........look for chipped teeth at the Large low / reverse sliding gear and also at the counter shaft where is meshes ..........also the reverse Idler & the counter shaft can have chipped teeth.......these chipped gears in some cases can be salvaged if you know what your looking for but if they have taken on a large enough chip and look tapered the Transmission will want to come out of that gear.

Do you know what year Jeep the CJ T-18 is from? All CJ T18s from 1972 to sometime during the 1976 (no one seems to know exactly when the switch happened) run were the close ratio 4.02 low. After that all CJ T18s were the wide ratio 6.32 until the end of production in 1979. Any 1977 to 1979 CJ bell housing will bolt to your AMC motor and the CJ or Ford T-18 however the stick out length of the Ford is almost an inch shorter than the CJ version so a special pilot bushing is required, available at Advanced Adaptors. If your jeep came with a T-176 then ithe bell housing will also work with the Ford T-18 .

The best way to verify what gear ratio a Transmission is, is to put it in low gear, mark the input and output shafts then turn one of them and count the revolutions of the other.

As Incommando states it would be cheaper to just use a Dana 20 Transfer Case in lieu of the Dana 300 as the CJ T-18 comes with the rear adaptor for the Dana 20 as part of the box and the Dana 300 adaptor is another adaptor to buy. But if you still want to use the Dana 300 , as most of us would, then maybe the Ford version is the best way to start as the Transmission begins as a 2 wheel drive so an adaptor needs to be purchased anyway and the Ford version usually can be had for less than a CJ.

:)Saddle,
I believe the Jeep T-18 versus the Ford version has one bolt hole that is off as compared to each other although the T-176 housing will work with the Ford version........a hole would have to be added for the Jeep T-18 version to bolt up ..........

The 1977 through 1979 CJ bell housings were drilled for both the CJ T-18 and the Ford “butterfly” Transmission pattern. The T-150 was the stock Transmission for those years which has the Ford pattern. By drilling and tapping for both transmissions Jeep only needed to stock one bell housing for both of the transmissions offered.

I agree with you on running a Dana 20 with the T-18 for the price of the adapter I can rebuild my T-176 and will know what I got. As to have bought the T-18 and possibly have to rebuild it also. The thing that scares me is the availability of parts for the cj T-18 . :)

If you rebuild the T-18 , with proper care it should last a long time so why worry about future parts.
