The pushrods for a 1979 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 258 are 5/16 x 9.622 if I am correct.
What pushrods would you use if you did the 4.0L head swap?
 
Don't know about the difference in lifter height above deck, but if you include a new cam with your head swap, make sure you check push rod length carefully as different cam manufacturers use different base circle diameters for their cams.
 
I am not doing the head swap, just trying to solve a puzzle.
