Chems in the 'high-mileage' oil will swell seals some.
The reason you see the oil where it is-Is because that's a low point, and it gets blown back there also.
You should try some 15W-40 Rotella.
Also-clean your PVC valve. Plugged/dirty PCV can cause the block to build positive PSI.

Is there a way to tell if the RMS is bad after the pan is pulled ?

Sometimes you will see a wet c'shaft back of the main seal.

I was suspecting the RMS on 'Black Betty' but luckily before I got into it I recalled that a couple of years back I had to replace the engine oil dipstick tube and it was shorter than stock making for inaccurate readings. Taking this into account I marked what I thought were the correct positions for add & full but apparently I was still over... and leaking here and there. I've since adjusted the amount of oil at changes and when adding. Gonna hafta get another stick... and not the beating kind.

One more question ! How many hours would it take a qualified mechanic to replace the front and rear main seal and pan gasket ? AMC 304 V8

On an overhead hoist-With the 'rite' tools. I've done it in an 'easy' hour.
Depends on how hard the old gasket is to clean off.

That was for AMC engines.
Some cars you have to pull the engine to R&R, RMS.

Back when I had more money than time, I had it done at a shop that I'm friends with the owner. By his book I thnk I recall it was 5 shop hours on my 360.

With most things the book time and the real time are way differnt thats how they make their money.

Sure, but on the other hand, if one's not done this sort of work before it may well take book time to see it to the end. imho
Also while some shops may seem knowledgeable, one I used to frequent when I had more money than time had trouble keeping qualified personell on hand as the big money is 80 miles north of here for mechanics. So just after getting ASE (and other) qualifications many at this and I'm sure other shops guys would get the 'greener grass syndrome' and move out leaving the shop owners to hire new guys and not invest in them until they could really trust them staying put. I wouldn't use the term victimized but after getting my CJ or van back from the shop on occasion I'd have to make adjustments to components that were not as I'd left 'em going in, or repairs that were not complete. Nowadays I do most of my own work with the help from this and other forums.
