Removing rear output shaft

So are there any tricks to removing the nut on the rear output shaft? Just don't want to break anything.

Sprayed it down last night with penetrating lube. Picked up the 1 1/8" socket. Breaker bar and 3' cheater barn and it is not budging. I can try to heat it up a bit but that is always my last choice.

Can I hurt anything?

I'm sure you had it in gear, I used an air wrench. Come up with something to hold it with like a pipe wrench or make a tool out of a piece of 1/4" flat stock with clearance holes in the center for the wrench and outer holes for the bolts.

Yes, dropped the drive line and the nut in the middle of the yoke, rear output shaft.

I did have it in gear. I so you use the plate to keep the yoke / gears inside from turning?

I can look at that, just wanted to make sure I don't damage internals of the Transfer Case or that the darn thing is left hand threaded or something before I apply more leverage.

It is pretty much accepted practice to replace the nut, if one can be found. there is a lot of torque on that nut.

I am wondering if there is some pre load spec on the bearing that is adjusted by the torque on the nut. similar to a pinion bearing.

or if it just holds the yoke on the end of the shaft.

Always a good point the check whether the thread is right or left handed, which can be done with a visual inspection, if possible. Torque load should be in a repair manual or fsm, of course. It has been a long time since I did it.

Didn't see anything in the manual in a preload. It just said remove the nut.

Got the sucker off. Another 24 hours of soak and dropped the Transfer Case into low range. Then kind of popped it quick like and it gave.

Sorry I'm coming in late in the conversation.. I always use a impact gun and hold the yoke with my manly hand.. Never had a problem getting one off. You really only need the fancy holder bar when reassembling it to tourque it down.

Same here, use an impact wrench to remove that baby ....... but you already got it done the hard way. Seriously, well done.
