Rescued Grandfathers Scrapyard 79 CJ Rebuild - Steering/Suspension/Drivetrain

Just the little farm tractor. Kubota L2501 with pallet forks. Great for anything under 1200lbs. After that we have the big brother.
That's great you have access to "Big Brother"! If needed...

Ok so, I’m sitting here with my father in law having some wobble pops, and I’m learning some more about the Jeep. Apparently it used to have Renegade decals on it. Now on top of that, my father in laws 78 CJ7 is in my yard right now as they are moving. The back seat in that jeep is the one out of my wife’s jeep. Things get cloudy with details, but everyone is 100% certain that this back seat is the one from the 79 CJ5 . Someone tell me I’m crazy, but is this a Levi (Edition) ’s seat? Could this have been a Levi (Edition) ’s? I swore it is a base model, maybe it’s something more? Any insight from anyone?

Well the fedex man has failed me again. I was sure hoping to finish the engine wiring today, but have to wait on the ignition box. So for now I’ll have to be happy with just getting the alternator fitted and wired. Had to get relatively creative, but I think it will work. Seems skookum enough. Converted to a GM style 10SI. Once the ignition box shows I can finish the engine/EFI wiring, then on to the dash and column. Getting relatively close to it maybe making noise.

One thing I noticed is some of my posts, maybe slightly inebriated, about the seats and stripe decals aren’t showing. Hopefully I didn’t break a rule or anything.

If you look at the top of the forum you'll see a big red notice we had a big database crash. I thought I restored all the posts but I must of missed a couple. I'll find your missing ones on my backup site and restore them.

Ahhhh ok. No worries at all. I may have rambled a bit as I was indulging, was hoping I didn’t break a rule or something. If you can’t find them, it’s no big deal. It was mainly about the seats being Levi (Edition) -esc and that the Jeep is almost certainly a Renegade . Or at least used to have the Renegade decals. Thank you so much for all your work here, you sir are awesome 🫡

Finished up most of the engine/EFI wiring today. Next steps are to figure out what I’m doing for a battery and mounting. Then I suppose move onto the column and see what kinda shape it in. Definitely making progress.

So today the inner tub got lined, dash and column are mocked up. Working on the wiring. The painless harness that came with it is the customizable one that doesn’t have any grounds. Not a huge deal as I’m a big fan of buss bars and plan on putting in a main negative buss near the battery. The only head scratcher I had was for the brake warning light. I’m using 921 bulb sockets that have a power and ground wire. The only one I’m not sure of is the brake indicator light. The harness had a brake indicator light, and a break indicator light B+. I’m figuring the indicator light is the ground side of the light coming from the parking brake switch and the B+ is from the propositioning valve. I’m not really sure how that would work for the light having a ground but that’s how I have it set now. If anyone has any insight that would be awesome. Anyways, dash is about 60% wired. I plan on adding a tach and clock, but I’ll wire those later once some funds become available. Can’t believe it’s over 200 bucks for those 2. I suppose the next step would be to get the battery, tray, and all the main bus + and - sorted, but alas, have to wait on funds. Hopefully my cornfused look gives someone a chuckle.

Fantastic post.
How did you line the tub? What did you use?
I sprayed it all with some cheap rustolemum converter, then scuffed it and used raptor liner. I’ve had great luck with it in the past. Holds up decent and looks pretty good. Did the rockers on the white truck that held up to 3 New York winters then tons of logging roads here in Washington. The F150 was my hoop-de-ville and it held up great.
