I recently purchased a 1984 Jeep CJ7 . The heater hoses have been spliced so that the ouput from the water pump is routed directly back to the rear of the manifold. I am trying to reroute the hoses to their original connections.

There are 2 hose nipples on the firewall just under the battery. I believe these are the connections to the heater core. I now have the water pump hose going to the top nipple. The bottom nipple now has a hose that goes to the rear of the manifold.

There appears to be another outlet on the passenger side. There is currently no hose on this nipple and it is leaking antifreeze when the radiator is full. What size should this hose be and where should an attached hose be routed?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You have it hooked up the same way my '84 is but i'm not sure what other outlet you would be talking about. Could you post a pic of it.

Just guessing here since I don't have my CJ handy to look at, so this may not be correct, but:

My thought is the heater core was probably bypassed because it leaks. The two heater core connections should be in close proximity to each other, sticking straight out of the firewall, under the battery tray (if yours is mounted at the firewall). The third nipple you are referring to is probably the drain for the cowl that dumps water out of the cowl when raining, and looks like it may be dumping anti freeze when you have a leaking heater core! That third nipple doesn't have another connection. Mine has an "L" shaped hose about 6" long pointing toward the ground.

By the way, where did you get your Jeep from? I know of a CJ7 that was sold a few weeks ago to someone around Jacksonville. It'd be a hoot if you have that CJ.

Thanks. You are probably right. I'll replace the heater core. The Chiltons manual at least has those instructions.

I purchased it in 12/13 from a guy who lived in Ponte Vedra.

It is a work in progress.

Here is what I have. Red hose goes to water pump and black hose goes to a 90 degree fitting coming out of the top of the motor.

Be aware, the fitting from the water pump is not the same size as the fitting on the heater core. Water pump = 3/4" .... Heater core = 5/8" This always seems stupid to me. Vehicles of all sorts are supposed to be engineered, how difficult would have it been to make both fittings the same size. Even the fittings on the water pump bypass hose are different sizes.

..... the third nipple is a drain.

Be careful man-handling the heater box when you remove and re-install it. They're getting old and brittle. Don't want to break the box and have something else to repair.

Hedgehog - thanks for this bit of information!

I've been researching this morning & hadn't found the nipple sizes anywhere. I was starting to think I must have a different water pump. I just got my CJ running yesterday & within a few minutes split this hose open. PO had forced a 5/8 hose over the 3/4 hose bib! The heater port is so close to the head & was so covered with gunk I didn't even notice the heater hose was there until I pulled off the upper radiator hose.

Look for a hose reduction barb at the hardware store and use 2 sizes of hose.

Found one in stamped brass at Advanced for three bucks. NAPA had a plastic "coolant hose adapter" but they told me not to buy it because coolant would destroy it.

 Thats one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
