got it fixed, the carb spacer was the problem after waiting all day for the mail truck to come i had it running in 15 minutes. it looks like i am getting smoke from the air pump could it be sucking up the smoke from the paint bakeing off the exhaust, or is something else wrong? thanks

I have not seen an air pump smoke, what it does is blow cold air on exaust valves. There could be a leaky valve cover and oil is burning off. I once had a pump freeze up from a bad bearing after it squeaked for a short while.

i think it is just sucking up they smoke from the paint burning off the exhaust manifold. i am now getting 15 on idle (about 650 rpm) picks up to about 18 at 2000rpm

got new cats and exhoust today then took it to the smog station, passed the emissions part no problem but failed the evap test so i will be hooking it up to the home made smoke machine and trying to fix it tonight. it was over all a good day until i ran out of gas on the way home:mad:

If you can't find the leak source at the 'can'. Look at the fittings and 'O' ring seal on the gas tank sending unit.
That's where my leak was. The soldered fittings had come loose and I had to re-solder them.

I always heard that California emissions was a bitch but damn, they run an evap test on that old of a vehicle! Your smoke machine should point you to the problem.

i think i found the problem, the filler hose is full of cracks and the hose clamps werent even tight, now the hard part, finding one for a 77 aparently they only used this style for a year so they are almost impossible to find.

It might be possible to get a custom hose made at an industrial hose outfit like Hose Man or see if you could make a straight pice work purchased from the same outfit. The one I have was purchased from them, it is quite heavy duty and will probably last the life of the vehicle.

Can you pressurize the tank at all?
Is YES-Spray the hose with soapy water and look for bubbles.
Those filler hoses will have surface cracks and still be sound.

tured out being the flage that is attached to the fill neck for the breather tube rtv and jb weld putty sealed it up enough to pass fortunately i hooked it up to a pump before bringing it in. but in the end it passed. now the long wait till the dmv opens monday.:madjeep:
