1985 jeep cj7 360 20 rear and 30 front w/warn lockers 5 speed tranny,

1971 dodge dart built 318
After building installing and finding that i blew a head gasket, i re installed head gasket and everything, set the distributor and was waiting on ups for plug wires. Hook them up and start it, had to spin dizzy a lot to start it. Once started it was rhythmically backiring through tail. Adjusting idle mix fixed that to some degree., as i advance or retard, im getting the backfire at idle. Should i re stab the dizzy? Not sure if im just way out.

check for vac. leaks.
Only you know if you stabed the dizzy right the first time.
 
I restabbed and its still missing. Checking compression after cylinder gasket. Hope its a vacuum leak
 
How do you track down a leak? Is there a tester like for compression? When i disconnect dizzy for timing, there is no real difference in idle, should there be?

A vac. gauge might show a leak by jumping around instead of being steady or show lower than normal. but than again maybe not depending on where the leak is.
The best way would be to spray some starting fluid around the intake,& bottom of carb and see if the rpm's change.
If you have the dist. hooked to a ported vac. line the rpms won't change because there should be no or very little vac.
 
It is hooked to distributor. Ill try the ether next. There is a squel when revved, not a belt squel, a forceful whistle. This was before and after intake removal
 
Passenger side intake by firewall. When i spray fluid it bogs down. That may be the whistling at revs.
 
Yeah, whistling is a vac. leak. Glad you found it. I guess this means new intake gasket time. AGAIN :(
 
My fear is that i have done this twice. Everything on the engine is new except the intake, it was blasted at machine shop. I have used wire cup brushes to clean gaskets. Have i ruined the mating surface is my fear. Look, im at the point of just getting it going for a while. What drastic measures can i take this round. If sealer, what type, i used indian head gasket sealer last time. What is the sure seal without buying an intake
 
Did you replace it with a new gasket when you pulled it back off?
 
Then just make sure everything is good and clean. I was asking because you never want to reuse a gasket it will leak every time.
 
I cleaned to a shine with wire brush, used black around the water and sealer around air ports
 
If they blasted the mating surface of the intake that may be your problem.
I would try some red rtv or maybe copper coat on the intake to help it seal.
 
Ok, I'm going rtv, high temp red. Monday I'm clear, so we will know by tuesday

How would this affect the seal Old Dog? and these heads weren't milled were they? Or could this be from a warped intake?

My only thought here was that I got an alum. intake with my jeep that had been blasted, and the surface was left pretty rough. I never used it as it didn't look like it would seal very well to me.
Your thought on the milled heads could be a good one. I don't remember if Germy said anything about this.

So it sounds like there was too coarse of sand and too much air pressure used on that soft cast aluminum manifold.
 
Heads not milled, just valves and seats done. The surface comes to a shine before applying gasket, either rookie mistake/bad luck or warped. Gonna slather it up and let it cure for 24 before starting. Ill check to see if the intake is true too. Thanks guys!
 
You can take a straight edge to it to make sure it true. If you think that could be the problem.
