Servicing AMC 20/30

Servicing AMC 20/30
Most likely they are looking up your drivetrain and the computer tells them there should be a G.M. 10 or 12 bolt rear behind your 350- 350 setup. you may be better off looking up the part # yourself and ordering that way. Unfortunately, most parts store clerks are useless without their brain box on the counter.

i work at advance auto and it only brings up a AMC20 .

OK. So far so good on tje AMC sevice. As far as the tranny, not so much. It is still leaking. I have read up a little on it, and just recently ordered the Turbo Hydro Matic Handbook. One thing I saw is that the governor cap looks like it may be leaking. It has a "snap ring" type holding it in place, and there was several drips coming from it while I was under it again looking. Accourding to WITTRANS.com, it has a o-ring inside the cap. Doe sanyone know if replacing that o-ring is as simple as removing the cap, and swapping the o-ring?

I have others that I am looking at also, I just want to get some of the easier things taken care of before I get the book.

thanks again
JJ

Do you know how much fluid comes out when you pull the cap?

ALL OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:dung: that sucked too. HAHA. Either way, I am gonna grab another cap, as I was not able to straighten the lip out. It still had a leak. Can you actually prevent fluid from coming out? Lifting rear end, drivers side, anything?

thanks
JJ

I have called around a cpl of places. Everyone asks me if it is 10 or 12 bolt. Why? I am more than positive that I have an AMC 20 and it had 12 bolt. Could they be showing the Chrysler 8.25? Has anyone had this problem? I hve a chart with the covers on it at home, I am at work. The chart I found pretty quick was a gasket chart. And both the AMC 20 and the Chrysler 8.25 are very similar, except the 8.25 has 2 less bolt holes.

thanks
JJ
JJCJ5, my '80 CJ7 AMC20 is a round "dog-dish" with 12 bolts. I just wire-brushed the cover today in prep to seal it up, so I'm sure. I counted the bolts, and punched out my own gasket, so I'm double-sure.

I looked at the FelPro gasket and didn't like the skinniness of it. I bought a roll of 12-inch gasket material and, using the dog-dish as a pattern, cut one out. I used a hole punch to pop out the screw holes. I feel better about the seal quality if the bolts hold the gasket in place.

didn't want to start new tread...just had a question, is the gasket required or can you just RTV the cover?

You can just RTV it. Thats all I ever did as I hated the gasket they sell for it.

my last service I used the gasket and RTV on the outer edge....would you RTV both or just the outer surface...I hate the cork gaskets!!

I did the surface where the holes are to be sure it sealed around them.

so ditch the seal, awesome...thanks alot:D
