Chrome bumper-ettes came on my Renegade when new. I still have them mounted on the back of my Jeep. I believe a spare tire larger than standard tire size would eventually destroy the sheet metal in the corner where the swing out attaches. New bumper with swing out tire mount would eliminate the bumper ettes, change the original look, and break my bank. Maybe when I win the lottery I'll think about it some more. Not for nothing, many have run the larger spare on the original equipment without incident and will be quick to say so, Others have not been so lucky and have the bent metal to show for it.

I refused to pay the stupid high prices as well.... some steel tubing, a buddy's welder, and an afternoon and this is what we came up with. I considered mounting bumperettes as I like the looks, but went with D ring mounts instead.

I only had 30 x 9.5 x 15 tires and it cracked the sheet metal. For years I didn't have the back seat in because it was rare that I had a passenger in the back seat and just had the spare laying back there chained down. Eventually I needed the back seat in so I spent the money on a WARN spare tire carrier that mounts to their bumper. At the time it was the only way to go but about a year ago I went in 1/2 with a buddy on a used welder. Still haven't used it yet. Sorry I don't have a picture right now either

I ordered the hinge, and I just ran across the paperwork for it a couple months ago and probly pitched it. I believe it's basically a trailer spindle, but it came with the outer sleeve with zeros, inner bearings, oil seals, and cap. I'm lazy and went the prepackaged route. If I can scrounge up the source I'll post it up. The spindle welds to the bumper, passing all the way thru so the welds are on the outer surfaces top and bottom. Here's a couple more pics

I've made a few bumpers now. Steel tubing is far more expensive than you'd think. I spent around $200 for the steel to make my last bumper. Granted it is a lot of bumper and the tire/gas can carrier wasn't included. It makes the $400 and $500 bumpers seem not so pricey.

building it is the fun part. I am working on something that picks the tire up off the ground and sets down again when you need it. I am fat and old and off road tires are heavy.

- '80 CJ7, Just a rolling frame right now... will have Mopar 360, Torqueflite 727, D20, full size D44, Chrysler 9.25 with 4 wheel discs. SOA on Rubicon Express 1.5" YJ springs.
With you there... I got the same idea from military trucks because their tires are large and heavy.

Depends on the vehicle, but they normally have a pulley system similar to a pickup has for an under bed spare. The newer trucks have an arm that comes down.

A Hi Lift is a heavy way to go and I love my Hi Lift jacks. A Come Along would be cool and light in weight. But they are a bit of a one directional proposition.

So decided to go better on other prep items such as paint and other things that csnt be sold or upgraded easily.
Went with the Smitty rear bumper with tire swing...hard time to justify the huge gap in better bumper right now when I wish I could do factory.
However front bumper I am being picky and can't find anything I like...see plenty on other rigs but never see any on websites.
Like to do a wider bumper (have a stubby) with a small winch/brush guard and d-ring points.

It was custom built by them in 2008 as was the rear carrier (on a different builders bumper):
JCR no longer does 'custom work', but still sell off the shelf bumpers.
