I need to change the speedometer gear on my 1983 CJ7 . I understand that this is fairly simple, but is there anything I should be aware of? Also where would I find the directions?

If you look at the part that holds the gear in there should be a few number stamped on it. those coincide with the number of teeth on the gear.when the new gear installed the top part needs to be lined up so the number of teeth on the new gear is in the middle of the hold down forks. Im sure explaining it to you over the net has you confused. Once you look at it the light bulb will click.
Thanks for the information. Sounds easy enough. I looked around for directions, but all I could find were the ones that had a electrical connection. Mine of course has the cable.
