Sport Bar modification

Peter - Thanks. At first I didn't like the paint, but with the number of compliments it receives I'll probably stick with it. You are seeing a classic 20 yard paint job though. Up close she's rough. Unfortunately there are a number of previous paint jobs on the car so to do a paint job right it would need to be stripped to bare metal .... :( not something I can afford right now.

I thought about a bar in the back. But that would restrict the height of what could be carried. When it's in place the rack provides a lot of strength. I have been thinking about adding a cross member though. Also remember this is not a roll cage even though it is beginning to look more and more like one. It was sort of my goal not to make it look like it was a real cage ...... but the more I consider a bar back there the more I am considering one. .... :) ... it would be an easy addition, a simple 90* champher .... Hmmmmm .... Gee thanks Peter...

IOport51 - How does the tubing attach to the top plate? Yours is finished so it looks like you will be bolting the tubing, possibly with a foot plate to it. I was thinking that the tubing would be welded to the top plate.

Is this being manufactured by one of our own here on this board?

The tube has a threaded insert welded inside it and it is bolted to the dash mount with a grade 8 bolt. It is also bolted to the existing bar so the front section is one piece. and it makes bolting the dash plates on relatively easy.

Nicely done-I have to be honest and say I would have welded the bar to that loop. The attachment to the front looks nice. :cool:
HINT-Drill a 1/8" hole at all attachment points to let the inside of the tubes to 'breath' and reduce internal rust- ;)

they are most definitely not air tight.:D
 
I should have stated all WELDED rollbar connections should have a small 'breathing' hole for air circulation.....

Short hijack...

Hey IO, where did you get your Transmission shift lever boot and bezel?

Hijack over...

HH: I like it. In a 'slow roll' :oops: (single, not multiple down the side of a mountain roll), I see it providing some additional protection. But, as you noted, it's an accessory. And with only lap belts, there's other things to worry about.

Tip: You could probably 'sandwich' (plates above/beneath floor) the front down tubes to the frame at a later date, if you were so inclined. My 6pt cage is constructed that way. Makes for somewhat easier (dang thing is heavy) removal, if necessary.
 
in reply to the hijack, the bezel and tunnel cover are original. I had the bezel chromed some where along the line. the boot was some on line source but I could not tell you who. That was a lot of help, wasn't it?:D

I liked the idea of the "Rock hard" roll bar, there is a possibility that I may extend support with steel plate up under dash and down to the floor, but not in the near future. I do have plans to put a bar at shoulder height for the 5 point harness and that will bolt in as well. The possibility that I may want to remove the bar for a tub make over and the difficulty that a fixed bar would present makes me want it to be bolted on. In other words, once you weld everything together you can't take it out with out cutting something apart.:cool:

I am also about %90 sure that what I have is as strong if not stronger than the later model wranglers that attach to the windshield frame. I never did quite understand that one.
 
I wonder if the ones that attach to the windshield are actually there to prevent the windshield from collapsing on to the driver. This is or was a common problem with a CJ in a crash. Maybe this is a design made to deal with that.

I suppose it would help to prevent the windshield from ending up in your lap.

I'll post up progress and when done one I finish a design and get started. I'm not sure if I want to go with the front hoop and side bars like HH has done or run up the window and sweep back like some others. I bang my head off the YJ side bars that I have in there in a regular basis. I'm leaning towards something similar the HH as I think that will give me the most headroom but with the sweep back type the pip is already further out since you don't need to go into the bend of the front hoop but then you need to bend back into meet the rear hoop anyway......hmm.

So it's like HH has or

Whow, you are right, so similar. I really like the first one, if I had thought od that or seen that design I probably would have copied it, right down to the way the front foot bends under the dash. The most difficult part of mine was figuring out how to push the over head bars out to clear both my head and shoulders, but still stay under a bikini top I still like my back end which is a copy of the Land Cruiser mixed with the Wrangler design. :) The attachment points, in my opinion, are superior. Love the powder coat finish.
