Hi everyone,

I stumbled across this forum while trying to search for an issue I am having with my CJ5 . First off, it is a 1971 CJ5 with the T-18 4 speed Transmission with the BW OD unit. It has the stock Transfer Case and stock axles. I just had my clutch, throwout bearing, etc. replaced because of my throwout bearing making a lot of noise. Well, it has been about a week and I am starting to experience a squealing noise when I am in gear driving and not on the throttle, i.e. coasting. It sounds like it is coming from the Transmission area and almost sounds like a bad bearing. The pitch stays the same no matter how fast I'm going, mostly disappears when I get back on the throttle, and disappears when I push in the clutch. It has got progressively worse over the past couple days. I have checked the fluids in the tranny, Transfer Case , and axles, and the level is good. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

Cheers,
Jared

Sounds like a dry and going bad pilot bearing/bushing. Unfortunately there is no cure besides pulling the Transmission and replacing the bearing. I'd take it back to the shop that did the work and complain. If they have any integrity they will take care of the problem for you.

Be aware that this is my guess at what your problem could be.

Pilot bear'n noise is usually just as you let the clutch out.
How much pedal freeplay do you have?
You want 1-1 1/4 inches. No more/No less.
My bet, T/O bearing.;)
Who's clutch parts did you use?
Better have a 'word' with the wrench-monkey that did the work--

Lumpy - You are probably right, since the pilot shaft would be spinning right along with the flywheel when the clutch is engaged so there wouldn't be a reason for it to make any noise. An improperly adjusted throw out bearing would or could be spinning away all the time where it's not designed to do that then begin to drag on the clutch fingers creating a harmonic type sound. But a warn bearing would be felt in the clutch pedal too. ..... I think the clutch should be adjusted, unless it's a hydraulic clutch which has no adjustment. Then you might look at the slave cylinder to see if it was attached properly.

Don't think the OP has hydro on his 71.
Wasn't that the time, when that chain set up was used for clutch linkage??

Just trying to cover the bases Mr. Lumpy

:chug:Yes, it does seem that way sometimes. It's kind of like pulling a bar stool up, ordering a beer from the bar tender and working out a problem. At first the answers are to the point, but as time passes they become a little wilder until somebody joins the conversation and we totally forget what the original question was. :chug:  :booze: :dunno: :wasted: :barf:

Any updates yet?
