Hi guys,

Running an SR4 /Iron Duke (yeah, I know...upgrade is already on the horizon and I haven't finished project #1!)

Anyway, the shifter knob says you're supposed to push down to get into reverse. However the Transmission slides into reverse all the time, meaning the shifter is in the permanent 'down' position. I can pull up on the shifter and shift into gears normally but when I let go it falls back into the 'down' position. This is kind of an issue for me since 1st is next to it. I imagine there's some sort of spring or slider that should be there that isn't, but I have no idea since I haven't seen what normal looks like.

I've searched the forum and haven't been able to come up with a fix. Has this happened to anyone else? Major fix? Pics of what the shifter linkage should look like? Thanks!

I also can find very little info about your shifter, I did find a closed ebay auction with a good picture of your shifter that clearly shows a spring around the base of the shifter handle, so it sounds like you need to pull your shifter boot and see whats going on Jeep CJ5 CJ7 CJ8 Borg Warner SR4 Shift Lever Assembly | eBay

Well the good news is that's what mind looks like although I have no idea what that big spring actually does. It sits outside of the box and there's no collar or anything on top of it, meaning the spring doesn't hold any tension and looks like it just holds the shifter boot up.

no roll pin thru the shifter shaft? My thought is that there should be a roll pin thru the shaft so that the spring holds the shifter up til you wanna shift into reverse

You know that makes a lot of sense. I'll take a look and see if I can find anything missing - I'd be really happy if that was the fix! Thanks a bunch, will report back.

This is a common problem with the SR4 . They have the shift in the tailhousing and the linkages wear. With a lot of mileage you can shift into the wrong gear. Sometimes it's not just the push-down reverse but going into 3rd instead of 2nd.

Alright took a look and there's nowhere for a roll pin in the shifter shaft. There aren't any holes but it does look like there is an indentation of some sort. Not sure if it's OEM or just wear and tear though.

Anyone running an SR4 that would be able to take a look? Thanks!

Just give me a few days, I need to run to the lake and pull mine up and see. I kind of hate to though, it has served better as a floating dock anchor than it ever did as a Transmission .

:laugh: Just kidding, mine went to the scrap yard 25 years ago. The only thing I regrete about it was not being there when that big ol' crusher came down and spewed the SR4 's worthless guts all over the place. That would have been worth the price of admission right there.

You're welcome. Also seriously if you need it, I don't. It's likely to meet the scrap man next month. I've got some Chicago travel planned in the next few weeks. Pm me if you have any interest.
