Hello

Just an update. I have the inline 6, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l litre. This Jeep had been sitting in a shed for several years and my first thought was to make sure it cranks over by hand first. It was tight so I pulled the plugs and put some "Crown penetrating spray" in the holes. I let it sit for a day and now the engine is nice and free and moves with a gentle push on the fan belt.
So next I thought I would try to crank it over ( with the plugs still out) with power. I put in a fresh battery and nothing but a click.
The wiring still seems solid from the battery to the solenoid so I was thinking I would isolate the starter and check it out next.
I was going to pull it off the Jeep and with battery cables put some power to it to see if it "pops and spins".
I am use to the starter on my tractor with two terminals on it. I can jump it with a screw driver if I want to.
If I "boost" the starter with cables connected to a battery, where do I put the negative, just on the housing somewhere? Also is this a good idea for my next move?

Again, thank-you very much for the help. I am just trying to take my time with all of this.

Jeff

You don't really need to remove the starter. I use plier handles for this (you know, back in the old days when we didn't need soft rubber covered pliers). Jump from one side of the solenoid (the battery cable side) to the starter side (the starter cable). This takes the possibility of a tired solenoid out of the system. .... Naturally, make sure the CJ is in neutral when you do this.

Thank-you Hedgehog.
Ah, same as what I would do with on the starter of my other tractor with a screw driver but on the solenoid not the starter. I just tried that and it didn't turn over so I guess the starter is not working.

Starters are funny critters. When I was a kid I drove through the spring flood waters on Lake Champlain, there must have been some water in the starter gear housing that froze over night and cracked the starter gear housing. Who knows what settled in the starter while it was sitting.

At least starters are relatively inexpensive.

Just looking at it I can already tell that the seal is in not very good shape for the housing into the starter its self. It appears to be torn.
I think there is going to be a lot of that sort of thing with this Jeep but on the up side, I will sure learn a lot. :)

Jeep used the Ford starter and external Ford solenoid sounds like your tractor has an internal solenoid like GM and Chrysler did :chug: at least its cheap :chug:

Did you make sure this 'fresh battery' was fully charged before trying to start the engine?
Move the battery ground(-)lead(attached to engine block)to the top mounting bolt of the starter.
Make sure the battery connectors are clean.

You could start backtracking your electrical starting system by checking the solenoid as it could have gotten corroded after all those years and bypassing it.

I took the starter off and put power to it and it is confirmed dead. I ordered a new one for $74 Canadian.
We''l now see what's next. lol

A place called "Ideal Supply".
It's a NAPA dealer.
It was $94.00 but I got $20.00 off for returning the old core which = $74.00
I didn't think that was a bad price actually. I saw them on the internet from anywhere from $74.00 to $124.00 Canadian.
I was happy it was just next morning delivery.

NAPA makes good parts that is a pretty good price for them

NAPA is my go to place also. :dbanana:
Is this a new one, or rebuilt?
Hint: Disconnect the battery POS(+)lead before doing ANY electrical work.;)
Good luck & fingers crossed. :notworthy:
