1973 cj5, 304 not sure of the rest
hey guys, i know this is a cj only forum but i have a question.
first off im a CJ5 man all the way, i have a 1973 CJ5 AMC 304 and love it.
question is my daughter turned 16 yesterday and i got her a jeep wrangler, thats what she wanted, i had got the 73 for her but she didnt like it.
with that said she cant drive the manuel, she wants a auto. hers is a 1988 4 banger with a 5 speed, can i put a auto into it and if so how much work and money are we talking?
thanks for your info.
michael

you would need a tranny/Transfer Case ,drive shafts, shifter and Transmission oil cooler to make the swap..might even need a different computer..My thinking is that you might come out cheaper to sell that one and then buy one with an auto..I guess you probably already know, but that 4 cylinder is a dog on the street

I've owned both and agree that starting with a auto first would be best. I'm not sure if they have made many 4cyl auto yj's since they are dogs.. An auto would only make it worse.

There is no reason in the world why a girl can't drive a standard. .......

^^^ What he said.

Michael, your talking allot of dollars to convert it over, you might want to look for one that's already an automatic. But I'm definitely with you on the auto verses manual for a new driver. Especially if you live in a hilly area...the stopping on hills and taking off . Let us know what you decide. Rick

youve invested in it already, im in the camp that there is no reason she cant learn to drive a stick.

I agree with previous post, an auto paired to the 4 cylinder would be sluggish to say the least IMO. A new clutch kit would be cheaper in the long run AND she would be able to drive a stick if one day she had too. If not, maybe trade someone for an automatic 6 cylinder?

I taught mine to drive a stick, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. She can do it just have some faith in her. Tell her she will make all the guys jealous when the see she can and they can't.

no doubt that she can learn to drive a standard shift. But,especially as a new driver,if she is and/or you are more comfortable with an automatic then by all means find her a ride with an automatic

When I was a kid, I tried for years to drive manual on my parents car, but couldn't get a handle on it. That was until the day I got a stick shift Jeep. I think it took me 48 hours to master it. I say let her figure it out! Necessity is the mother of invention!! :)

Good Luck!

My daughters will both learn to drive in my 4 speed Jeep. Once they have MASTERED it, then they will be allowed to drive an automatic.

Let us know what you decide to do. My CJ7 is an automatic and my daughter still wont drive it. That being said, this is a new driver and you want her to be as comfortable as possible. My daughter understands how and can operate a clutch. Manuals are super easy to learn but its her who has to be happy with your decision. Meanwhile, post up some pics of that CJ5 you briefly mentioned! :D

That is just un'merican right there!

My daughters are 8 and 10, and fight over which Jeep each of them will get. That said, I suspect that when they get older the old Jeeps won't be so popular, and they'll want some cushy soul-less modern day :dung: like all their friends.

I have hope that won't happen though (and that they'll be too busy wrenching with dad to get interested in boys)!:pissed:
