swapping ring/pinion

I found a set of axles out of a '77 QuadraTrac CJ7 w/3.54 gears. I am looking to replace my 2.73 gears in my '85 and want to know if there would be any problem in swapping out the diff/gears from these axles to mine.

To answer your question, if both sets are stock, not a problem.
Are you running stock tires?
If not, the difference in gear ratio may not justify the roughly $200 in set-up costs.

If I were running 33" I'd go with 4:10s-4:56

I pulled the covers off the front axle and back axle and found that the front ring gear has 46 theet and the pinion has 13. (3.54) The back ring has 39 and the pinion has 11 (3.55), would this be the reason? any info would help.

No, it would have nothing to do with breaking your axle shaft.

No that is close enough to not matter.
What rear do you have? If it's the AMC20 do you have the stock axles or the 1 piece axles? Also where is it breaking at?

Have you ever replaced ring and pinion gears?
To regear an axle isn't a simple job. If you don't have much experience it can be a lot of trial and error.
You have to shim the differential side to side.
Then adjust the pinion depth.
Check the backlash with a dial indicator like this:

Then when you think you have it you check the gear meashing with a gear compound painted on the gearset.

If the gear meshing isn't right you take it all apart and try again. The above picture shows too much pinion depth.
This can be very time consuming for someone that doesn't have much experience.
