This is for a friend with a very nice '69 CJ5 with a V6 and atlas Overdrive .

My T-15 /Dana 20 share oil/grease through their open cases. Does the T-14 /D18 have a similar arrangement? He is running different oil in each box. I'm thinking he might be wasting his time, but maybe not.

Can it be that nobody knows the answer to this question? Somebody must have rebuilt their T-14 .

Our other build has a T-14 /Dana 20 combo, but I don't know if checking that will help. You probably know this, but in the FSM it clearly states that the 4 speed Transmission has no cross-over oil passage. It does not clearly state that the 3 speed does, just that some transmissions do. It doesn't answer your question. You could also put the question on EarlyCJ5.com and see if you get a better response. Sorry...

Yep the T-18 doe not share oil, the 3 speed T-15 does. The T-14 looks a lot like a small T-15 .

I guess the cases aren't exactly open, but the bearings are open and oil definitely flows between the cases.

I would think of it as a poor design if they do flow between the cases and it would be a good plan to prevent the flow.

A 50+ year old design is a 50+ year old design. It can't really be changed now. With that being said, I agree and very much like the idea of my T-18 and Dana 20 being completely separate. Some of the T-15 /Dana 20 Transfer Case over flowing problems are related to the flow between cases. .... On a side note, both cases have their own drain plug and filler. ...... At least one CJ owner told me that they fill the Transmission , with the top popped off, with the amount of oil for both Transmission . and Transfer Case then let it sit for a while to drain from one to the other.

That's an interesting way to fill up. I would be concerned with lubrication on a long uphill or downhill grade though. Would it have been a factor? You also mention overflowing problems, What would be the effects?

They have been discussed here from time to time. I bet the gears turning move the oil around sufficiently in most cases. With my T-15 drive train I've always wondered about steep terrain. I bet driving keeps the levels where they belong, but what about parking on a very steep hill. Seems to work, exactly how I do not know.

my T-14 /D18 combo lets oil migrate slowly from Transmission to Transfer Case .
It is a pain because eventually the Transmission is low and t/c overfilled.
I have been told that back in the day they would install a sealed mainshaft bearing on Transmission .This would do the trick and if I ever have it apart I will look in to it. The overfill helps lube O-drive so not all bad. It's the speeedo that wanted to leak . Someday maybe I will figure it out. For now I just top of T-14 and forget about it.
