Transfer Case instructions state that front hubs must be locked (set to 4X4) before selecting four wheel drive. There are a few reasons I want to be in low range on dry pavement (creeping along in slow traffic or waiting in a line of cars stopping and starting going up hill or driving in a parade ect.), so what harm can come from selecting four wheel drive low without locking the hubs?

On pavement, driving slow there shouldn't be problems. However, offroad or climbing hills would cause stress to the tcase with the hubs unlocked in low.

Applies to twin sticks as well.
I try to keep my rear low only for special occasions.

The way I look at it is, you're just spinning a bunch of stuff that isn't doing anything.

Which then puts all the load on the rear. When in low this puts stress on the tcase on the trail. The OP should by fine for the way he plans to use his CJ.

I try to keep my front low for special occasions :D

Or if you destroy the front driveshaft and don't have a spare. :D

You have to be stopped to shift from HI to LO or LO to HI. Not a good idea in traffic. The t'case needs the front DS turn'n(engaged hubs)so you don't 'crash' the t'case gears.
