1970 CJ5, V6, 3spd, power steering, headers, electric fans, upgraded larger radiator, '78 grill, disc brakes (front only), swing pedals, hyd clutch, extended front shock mounts, upgraded front driveline w larger u-joints, warn OD, D30 front diff, lockers, 2100 carb, working on a '74 tub replacement, '78 windshield frame with '78+ Acme hardtop
I had a '69 T-14 rebuilt by someone/shop locally known as one of the best. I removed the factory T-14 out of my '70 CJ & installed the rebuilt T-14 . The rebuild is noisier than than the factory T-14 with 50,000 miles on it. I approached the rebuilder and he said some trannys are noisier than others. He absolutely guaranties the tranny to be correct. No other problems other than noise. Has anyone else heard or know this about the noise compared between trannys to be true? Thanks!

run...don't walk....back to the Transmission shop.
Get your old Transmission back.
You're being told some nice, rich, BS.
Should be no noise.....period.

This once again proves the point to just rebuild your own Transmission .
Then you have known gears and known parts. Not some rebuilders best guess.

How are your drive shafts? I had a slight bend in mine and I swear the noise was coming out of my Transmission . After the tranny rebuild, I still had the noise, man was I upset. It would sound like a grinding when I was in between accelerating and decelerating, that floating point. Balanced the shaft and it was quiet as could be from then on.

maybe you could remove the drive shafts and run it in gear to see if the noise persists? that might help isolate it :chug:

Drive shafts should be good. Same ones as before and no noise before. But thanks for the suggestion, will check anyway.

Old trick but most often is correct: I can feel the noise in the shaft handle on the tranny and the Transfer Case handle is nice & smooth as well as the OD.

What kind of noise? Grinding like bearings or gear whine? I assume the gears are all helically cut. Are you sure it isn't the tcase? I only get significant gear noise in low range which has the straight cut gears.

Not sure why you would get a lot of noise unless you have a worn tooth on one of the gears. Typically the synchros wear the most and create hard shifts.

What are you running for Transmission fluid? Light oil/grease will run with more noise than heavier oil. Also, how is your Transfer Case ? Did you remove carpeting or any other material that might have insolated you from the noise?

'69 Transfer Case rebuilt also. Noise is a Whine, at above 25 mph! Floor is treated the same as before with the '70 tranny & Transfer Case . New shafts & gears in tranny. I am going to approach the rebuilder this week again.

Is your rear axle pinion bearing going out? my jeep had that whining and I thought it was the Transmission , come to find out it was the pinion bearing going out:mad: so both got a rebuild

a couple things come to mind reading down thru the responses.the T-14 was used with the v6 and inline six.different gears i believe.some of the parts are interchangable but not all.also the Transfer Case gears were 29 tooth but different pitch between dana 18 and 20 models.
possible that there is some mismatched gears in the mix.i have rebuilt a few T-14 's and can't think of any other reason for the noise other than that or maybe wrong thrust washers in Transmission .check knowledge center with advance adaptors and novak adaptors for correct gear numbers if it gets disassembeled.they are all numbered.not saying that is the problem but worth checking out.i would be very unhappy if my tranny sounded that bad.hope you get it sorted out.mike

Both rebuild 6 months before and were quite when the old tranny & transfer were taken out.

Will be following up with builder this week.

Good News! The builder has agreed to whatever I want at no additional labor cost. He thinks the noise is coming from the gears all tho he assures they will not fail. He will open and replace the gears or go thu another tranny & install I have or donate a core auto 350 and help with a auto conversion. My choice. Very pleased! I do want to go to an auto someday but did not plan on doing the conversion until I had to rebuild the 225. What to do, what to do? I am leaning towards putting in my second tranny as we have a major trip coming up I was going to take the CJ on and a conversion would take too long. He did say the gears are getting tough to get with the 14.

First gear ratios are: T-14 - 3:10 & Turbo 350 - 2:52

Is this a concern when crawling over the tough stuff? (V6, 35" tires, 4:88 gears) I know, the lower the better but will there be that much difference in performance?

Thanks,

Was the input shaft bushing replaced? A bad one will give you a grinding noise while floating between gears..
