T176 questions

Hi guys and gals,
I have a couple of questions about a T176 I have just purchased to swap out my T4.
First, can anyone tell me if the reverse switch from the T4 would work on the T176?
Also the PO had this bolted to a Ford block and had to cut about 1/2 off of the end of the input shaft, do you think it will still reach the pilot bearing on a 4.2? I did get the T176 bellhousing but comparing the T176 sitting in the bellhousing to the T4 in its bellhousing the end of T176 is flush whereas the T4 sticks passed the end of the bellhousing about a 1/2 inch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as the switch Im not sure. Having bench pressed a few T-176s in and out of Cjs cutting that input shaft down worked for his application but not yours. The T-176 input shaft sits fairly deep into that bushing but it can gall pretty quick. Twist and torque will cause you problems in my opinion.

Now that the shaft is ford length you might be able to use one of the adaptor bushings Novak sells to put a ford Transmission in a jeep.

Yea, I'm concerned about not enough bearing surface on the shaft but Bent's suggestion to check with Novak is a good idea. I'll call them to see if they have a pilot bearing like that available.

One other question I have, is the side to side play normal on the input shaft?

the neutral switch and connector are different. i had the same issue with a 176 a while back, was told i needed to replace the input shaft due to it being shortend, walked away from and found one cheaper unmolested. i know the shaft was only around AMC 150 bucks but have to disassemble for replacement.

I was able to get in touch with Dave at Novak, he was very knowledgeable on this issue and is hooking me up with a pilot bushing made for a ford transmission. He said it should work but I should fit it up to be sure there is no interference. I’ll let you know how it works out.

It takes a different reverse switch connector. Online they are around $13+ but I found it at Advance Auto for around $5 and they had it in stock. I'll have to wait till I'm home to find the part number.

Novak should set you up really well on the pilot bushing. They were the only ones that had a handle on it for my swap. I wound up using a pilot bearing from a YJ which was a perfect fit but may not work with your shortened shaft. A jiggle side to side of the input shaft is not normal.

You'll have to get your driveshafts lengthened/shortened.
