Hi guys I've just started a rebuild on a CJ6 and when I went to change the oil in gearbox and transfer they were full of water :(
Now the Q is it has a T-18 -1b box with the granny gear in her do I rebuild the T-18 or start looking around for a new box

Open the top cover and see what condition everything is in. Surface rust is no big deal.

I've open it up and pulled the pto cover off and there about 4" of sludge in the bottom I doesn't look that bad won't move in and out of gear
I've filled it to the top with oil and about a ltr of diesel and cover it back over I've looked on the Novak sit and they do master rebuild kits for

Tear them both down, inspect, rebuild.

If there was water in them, they didn't get that way from rain. Someone ran the Jeep through a rather deep 'puddle'. Which means, dirt/sand/mud, came in with the water. All are abrasive, and not good for the bearings or shafts.

I'd also be checking the front/rear differentials. If the water was up above the Transmission , it was really above those pigs.

Was thinking the same mate but diff's have no water at all car has been sitting for 2 years only thing I can think of is rain water
They were full to the top of water had about 9ltrs of water just in the gearbox

It could have been used for a boat anchor, lol.

Drain it and fill it to the top with mineral spirits, set over night, drain , inspect. anything in it do it over again. get the sludge out and see how it shifts.:D

Not a lot of places that rain water could get in, unless the shifter had been removed. Even more difficult for the Transfer Case . But neither matters as you've got water that doesn't belong.

Take it apart and rebuild as necessary the damage is done save what you can!............I'm with others that have stated that it went through a deep stream and got water in via the vents........If your rear ends show no water check the vents........bet there plugged up!

:D:D:D:D

Ahhh but water rain water can easily get in a T-18 . If the shifting boot is gone or torn and you run with the top off and leave it outside in all weather water can and does get in your Transmission . How? Water flows down the shifter hits the top and seaps down into the guts. Oddly enough a good boot will stop this from happening.

If I were you I'd follow the mineral spirits advice (I'm a marvel mystery oil guy) and let her soak, both the Transmission and the Transfer Case . Then I'd jack the jeep up and run it in gear for a while. The object would be to churn things up and move the bearings. Remember things generally won't rust under greasy water, it's the transition zone where water meets air where rust occures. This is from my Jeep guy who has rebuilt hundreds of jeep transmissions.

Amazing.........4 inches of sludge , sand & silt in the bottom and folks are telling you to flush it and run it?.........:confused: There is not a bearing be it a roller or needle bearings which the T-18 has both in the World that likes water , sand & silt............

One picture shows the vent button in the upper corner and the other shows the shifter tower..........I guess anything is possible if it sat outside in the pouring rain for a year or two...........my guess is it still came in via the vent, but in either case take it apart and freshen it up!

:D:D:D:D

Did somebody say something about sand, salt and silt? I guess I missed that part. I am saying that a "milkshake" is not the end of the world.:D

I agree with IO, when talking about sludge I'm picturing milkshake crud.

If it were me I'd pull the top, drain the Transmission , then, beleive it or not, using hot water in a hose to flush the Transmission until gunk stops coming out. Let it dry then fill it with MMOl and let it soak. After the soak, while still full, I'd find a way to turn the Transmission over to flush out the bearings and spaces between gears along with the oil passages as much as possible. After that I would know exactly where the Transmission stood.

Not unusual to flush a Manual Transmission out with Diesel fuel under No load and at low RPM's on Jack stands the day after the vehicle ran through the water..........But 2 years later when the owner states he drained 9 liters of water out and there still is about "4 inches of sludge in the bottom I doesn't look that bad won't move in and out of gear" ........when the Goop now has had all that time to settle into and around the blocking rings , syncro's , needle and roller bearings is not will advised especially in a harsh environment like Australia can be......

Takes about 2 hours to pull one and separate it from the Transfer Case and have all the gears sitting on the bench...........Then and only Then would you know exactly where the Transmission stood.

I kind of thought it was already out. Getting the PTO cover off in place would be quite a chore. :D

Terry, you are very possibly on the correct path and the situation may very well be much worse than I picture it. But it may as well be clean when he starts to dismantle it.

One more point, where would you find a 5 gal bucket of Marvel Mystery oil??:D

can't wait to see how this turns out.

Thanks guys for all the great ideas
When I drained the box n transfer the water was clear as I'd say they had about 80% water n 20% oil and wasn't milky was in two parts water then oil
I've ordered the master rebuild kits from Novak and should be down under next week I'll take some pic's of the damage this weekend for you guys

Marvel Mystery Oil ... I have almost an endless supply. Several friends volunteer at House Hold Hazardous Waste. It is amazing to see the stuff that comes in and they can take what they want. Marvel Mystery oil unopened cans by the gallon, cases of gas cylinders, paint, roof coating that has never been opened, bug spray, the list goes on and on. This makes volunteering very appealing to some folks.

I've removed the box n transfer here's a couple of pic's of the water damage
