1978 CJ7 full old school glass body including grill. 304 w/T-18A, Dana 30 and 20.
Here is a picture of a tranny I found in a 79 CJ7 ... I had it pulled and bought it. Essentially I got everything from the Flywheel (was connected to a 6 cylinder), bell housing, clutch plate, Transmission , and Transfer Case .

Now...

A) did I in fact find the holy grail of transmissions?

B) is that a Dana 20 Transfer Case ?

B) what all do I need to bolt it into my CJ7 that has a T-150 .

For some reason I remember reading I can just bolt it right in. Any suggestions? My current clutch is real good... should I just drop the tranny from the tranny back and replace with the new or what?

Just trying to soak in some wisdom prior to the "oh :censored:" moment when I am missing something :) Thanks in advance!!

A. Only if its the wide ratio with 6.32 first gear. It may not matter to you if you dont rock crawl ( Florida ) as the other first gear is 4.XX

B. Yes

C. Being that it came out of a CJ7 your in good shape. Theones that came in J-trucks have the longer input shaft.

D. Your T-150 bellhousing will work with the T-18 so drop it from the Transmission back. The only thing I question slightly is the driveshafts but I believe the T-150 and T-18 have pretty close dimensions.

79 Cj with a Dana 20 . I'm betting it's the jeep T-18 which is not the same. Still good but heard it's a bear if you need to rebuild them.

If it were in fact a T-18A, it should be cast in the housing. At least that is what I was told. Mine is...

Since you have it, the top cover can come off and you should be looking at a massive first gear. There are a lot more teeth on a 6.32 first than a 4.03. You might have to make a few changes but it will work.

Guess I'll measure the length of the T-18 case versus the T-150 to if there is any differance. Nice to know I can just unbolt from the Bell and change from there back, should be 1/2 the work.

As for the stamp on the case I couldnt' find any stamp at all on it. I have seen others with a T-18 -B stamp or something but never any stamp at all other than that. Anyone have a pic of the T-18A stamp??

:)That Jeep T-18 will normally have a 7.43" input shaft that works with that bell housing........yours on the T-150 setup may be shorter.

On the gear ratio easiest way to tell is pull the shifter cover off and count the teeth on the front input gear inside.........should be 17 teeth for a 6:32 low Transmission .

THe shaft looks like this.

:D:D:D:D

If this tranny is the original Transmission from the 1979 Donor you are a winner. In 1979 the T-18 reverse will be found over and down next to 4th Gear; all earlier units are over and up by 3rd. The T-18 was a factory option from 1972 to 1979 in a CJ so this is a direct bolt in for your 1978 CJ with not adaptors.

On the bottom of the frame where the skid plate bolts up there is an extra set of holes at the back of the plate to accommodate the T-18 . Just slide the back set of skid plate holes to the back set of frame holes. The only other thing that needs to be done to the skid plate is to lower it 1”; any lowering kit will do. Everything in the clutch department will swap out between the T-150 & T-18 except for the throw out bearing fork and a bolt. The T-18 has one Transmission to bell housing bolt that sits right at the fork and is actually pressed in from inside the bell housing and uses a nut on the outside to secure the Transmission to the bell housing. (See the first picture in your post, bottom bolt, see the nut?) This nut has a flattened head but most importantly the fork is notched so the fork isn’t restricted by the head otherwise the throw out bearing won’t fully disengage. This bolt and the fork are not available anymore so if you don’t have them they need to be fabed up from available parts. (Just use the T-18 bolt and fork.) The bell housings from 1977 to 1979 are drilled for both the T-150 and the T-18 making them completely interchangeable and both shafts are the same size, lenght, and spline.

The other thing that will need to be done is to shorten the drive line at the rear and lengthen the one at the front. Any good driveline shop can do the work or order new from Tom Woods or others. The other option would be to see if the donor drive lines are available as they may work depending upon lift.

Wow thanks for all the information! It does infact have the Reverse down and to the right of 4th gear (that the shift pattern onthe knob anyways :))

I didn't get the donor driveshafts but I can get them I am sure so I will see if I can. I did in fact get the fork and bolt. I got everything from the fly wheel to the Transfer Case .

Lowering the Transmission support should be rather easy as well. This might just be a non-life treatening change!!

Strike did you pick this up in Merritt?

No I got it up in Ohio next to where my mom lives for 550 bucks and had it frieghted to me for another 250. :)

Well keep us posted on how it's coming because I got a lead on something similar I'm just not sure how much they're asking for it. I might end up doing everything you're Doing And following your lead.

I was just swapping in another automatic in the Laredo . No choice but to put the Transmission and Transfer Case in as one. I got a Transmission jack from Harbor frieght for like $80-$85. I cant see how I wouldve done it without it. Ive taken the smaller T-176 and dana 300s in and out by hand. The T-150 and T-18 are a step or two out of my bench pressing league. :)

Once you drop the Transmission the engine tilts downward. The nice thing about that jack is that it has a tilt function so you can get the angle right. I liked that alot with the auto cause it made it alot easier to line up the dowel pins and start the hard to reach bellhousing bolts. Another thing Iliked was the ratchet strap to keep it in place. Im also going to get more use out of it when I go to swap in my SM465 in the Limited . Its worth the money IMO.

I was just looking at one like that the other day... I have an engine stand that I think will go over and under my jeep as it has a 3 ft boom on it and I can crank it up right thought the Shifter plate in the body.

I see what your saying. I didnt want to take my hardtop off cause its holding my rusted windshield frame in place. :D My garage would make it difficult as well being its too narrow. When I do get to the frame off on the Limited I have the Boom and engine stand as well. Let the fun begin. :chug:
