My 5th gear just started clicking yesterday out of nowhere! I was just cruising down the highway minding my own business.
Does this mean a full rebuild or just 5th gear replacement?

Hard to say without knowing vehicle history, mileage, years of ownership, oil used, and disassembly for inspection.
E-fix is pretty tough.

Agree with Hagar, but it's probably you're 5th Speed Gear, which is on the outside of the Transmission case, but enclosed within the adaptor housing. It would be hard to imagine that the 5th driven gear, which is the last gear that is pressed onto the main shaft would be causing this. If it is the fifth gear assembly its not too hard to get to nor does it require any super special tools. Just a punch and hammer and a set of Transmission lock ring pliers to remove the assembly.

You could take the adaptor housing and inspect everything without removing the assembly. You's just have to clean the seating surfaces of the case and housing adaptor and reseal it when you re-install. I think it's 10mm bolts. Remember, everything on the Transmission expect for the fill and drain plugs and the shifter cover is metric.

I can't believe you actually use 5th gear. I think the only time I have used it is going down hill with a tail wind.

I just got the Jeep in March, so only 3 months of “history “ to go on. It’s got 80k on the odometer and I put syncromesh in the tranny.
I guess I’ll get the “how to” book on manual transmissions and decide if I want to tackle it.

Have you ck'd the oil level in the tranny and t'case?
BTW: I use 5th gear all the time w/33's and 4:88 R&P. :D

I have never had it happen.
What happens if you hold the shifter?
You have ck'd the u-joints and tranny mount, correct?

It only does it in 5th gear and you can definitely feel it in the gear shift.
I have not seen or felt any slack in the driveshaft. Haven’t checked the tranny mounts.
