the upper part of the shifter and the lower part that actually goes into the Transmission are tight. the slop is coming from lower down. The shifter almost wants to lay to the far left (all you would need to do is push up to get it into first.) So what also could it be thanks
 
You might want to pull the shifter cap(pictured above) off and have a look in there. You can do that while still in the Jeep, you'll just get greasy doing it. This exposes the shift rail but not the forks and gears. Make sure no dirt falls in.
 
K what down there would I need to replace to get the slop out of the shifter
 
Well, I'm not the person to be asking. My experience is very Limited , but possibly the shifter boots on the ends of the forks. More than likely though it's something up higher within the shifter connection. It's hard for someone to say without knowing what you might find once it's opened up.
