Sounds like a bad ground.

1986 CJ7, 258, Team Rush, Nutter Bypass, T-18, D300, AMC 20 Locked Rear, Dana 30 Locked Frt.
Almost always, a light that is burning dim is due to a poor ground, unfortunately this issue is all to common in a CJ.
