Temperature gauge Sending unit

Anyone know where the sending unit for the temperature gauge goes on a 78 straight six? PO cut the heater hose and tried to put it in there. Needless to say it doesn't work. Lol

It's in the head near the back of the engine on the drivers side.

Not for the gauge sender but for the e fan senders I used this gizmo;

The sender has to be 'matched' to the gauge.
