Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly

Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
Took a break from sanding - I can only stand so much "wax on, wax off".... I had been trying to decide where to stick a few speakers in this thing, and I have a pair of 6x8's and 6.5's. I decided to stick the 6x8's in pods between the roll bar and wheel wells, and the 6.5's in the doors. After many potential locations, I decided on one and cut holes in the doors to allow installation behind the inner door panels.

Then I cut out openings in the inner door panels, and will be making speaker grille fabric panels to cover 'em once the doors are all done. And speaking of the inner door panels - These were very faded and discolored. Scrubbed em good with soap an water, rinsed and dried, then wiped down with denatured alcohol. Sprayed em with SEM Color Coat and wow - look like new. Will check for adhesion tomorrow.

Thought about doing speakers when I overhauled my doors this last fall and winter, but never got to it. Speakers in the door would be nice to have. You did the correct size I believe

Yeah, they are fairly close to the outer door skin - another eighth of an inch and they'd be stuck to the inner surface LOL.

I'll wire them to a connector so I can just unplug when the doors come off. Might stick a decent (if that exists) pair of 5.25's in the dash and run them when the doors are off.

I am really impressed with the SEM stuff - covers beautifully, dries extremely fast, and the finish looks just like new plastic..... even got down in the crevices evenly.... I hope it sticks good HAHAHA

Forgot to add these pics.... had the welder out, ran across the spare tire stop (which must be from the YJ tub as it's not a CJ stop), so I decided to mod it a bit...

Yeah, they're welded but as for added strength - nah..... it's a bottle opener LOL figure it'll come in handy for camping trips when someone yells " Where's the stupid bottle opener???"

Ah. I see it now. I know some who have just screwed on onto the tub or bumper for that reason.

My dog's collar has one built in. I am not sure how I feel about that use of a pet though.

LOL

I was wondering WTH you had done there with your tire stop. Pretty cool. Did you form it then weld it in ?

Nah - That's too much like work.... I just cut the end off of one of these and used the flat part in the center as the support

Almost done wet sanding the primer in preparation for color - and every time I took a break from sanding, I worked on the overhead box. I've about got it licked.... locking mechanism works perfectly, hydraulic cylinder, while overkill, works as expected, and due to losing patience as well as interest in a nice, satin black finish - I just decided to hit the whole dang thing with aerosol bedliner. Would never use in a truck bed, but for bits and pieces it is pretty tough stuff. Had planned on doing the interior of the box with it, but I kinda like it all over.....

Small update - final color application has begun!! I'm just a tad bit stoked!!!!! I got the doors, fenders, tale gate, and all hinges painted.

After an abysmal first attempt at playing with automotive paint, I intended to correct the blatant errors of my ways, and try not to think about the things that would make an auto body guy smack me in the back of the head...... I learned NOT to wipe freshly sanded primer down with acetone prior to painting - sounded good at the time, but not later.... especially after all the fisheyes showed up. The other thing I learned, or rather just ignored, is that every kind of bug known to exist has an affinity for freshly sprayed paint. So, after rigging a bug proof paint "shelter" (you're gonna laugh when you see it) and using proper SEM fluid to wipe everything down with, I actually laid down some decent color..... no bugs, no trash, no fish eyes, and no runs...... I was shocked. I do have a bit of orange peel here and there, but nothing I can't live with. A few of the pics showing the orange peel aren't that bad now - most of those areas smoothed up nicely overnight..... here are a few pics

When I bought the paint, the general consensus was that it was a non metallic single stage paint. After using it, it has a slight metallic finish. Nothing near a typical, metallic paint, but just enough you see a little sparkle in it. See if this works.....

Nope - tried to embed a video thru tapatalk..... not workin. Here's a link:

Once the doors were ready to handle, I painted the door handle and lock with black caliper paint - makes a great finish...

Still have the tub, hood, roll bar, and grille to hit, and the coloring will be done!!

I forgot what I had used it in, but the door handles had dated a bit and the paint, or powder coating, had flaked off the door locks - so I thought I'd see how it looked. I like it.....
