Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly

Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
I got the oil filter adapter back on the timing cover, and made sure the oil pump was packed with Vaseline (and by the way - that's NOT one of my favorite tasks...). Next week should be heavy on Jeep work - hopefully. Got the oil pan flange nice and flatter, and in the process of inserting the crank oil seal I proceeded to beat it up pretty bad. The one in the broken timing cover went in beautifully and only has a couple hours run time on it at the most.... actually considered removing it and reusing it - but thought better of that and the new one will be here tomorrow.

Speaking of the broken timing cover - I've been mulling that bolt backing out over in my head, and have come to the conclusion that this is not my problem..... I never touched that bolt during this whole process. As random as it was, I didn't do it. I'm still gonna hang it in the garage as a "don't do stupid :dung: " reminder, but stick a clock in the crank seal hole. Might as well get some kinda use out of it.

What's the deal with the Vaseline?

What's the deal with the Vaseline?

I read a couple posts that said vasaline makes priming super easy, and dissolves in the oil once it warms up. It worked great the first time, and since I’ll change the oil out sone after getting it back to running I figured what the heck.

When I did mine I just used a drill and old dissy and ran it until I had good oil pressure.

I did the same thing and I had pressure almost immediately. Maybe the vasaline is for those folks who don’t run it up with a drill first. Either way I figure I’m good. Once I get everything buttoned back up I’ll spin her up good with a drill again.

Just seems like having something foreign in there even though it is " petroleum " before it heats up could clog things up. But what the heck do I know :)

I used it the first time and when I tore the engine down this time there was no sign of it anywhere. The screen on the oil pickup was spotless...... and it only had maybe a couple hours run time on it..... Sounded kinda wonky to me the first time I read it but tried it anyway.

You were right with the Vaseline. Nearing the installation of my oil pump on my rebuild and I was reading in the M.R. 252 and it said to pack it with Vaseline :agree:

Can I have your post printed, notarized, and framed. I need to show my wife I was right on something LMAO

Sure. I can autograph if you would like. I would say that was the second right thing though. You married her right ? LMAO. :agree:

First attempt at installing the new oil seal in the timing cover was less than successful - put a bock of wood on the floor under the timing cover, placed oil seal in its location, placed a spindle nut socket over the seal, and gently began tapping the oil seal in place. Taps got a little stronger as the seal refused to go home. Finally it said the heck with this, and it blew one side out. I knew better, was just too lazy to press it in. Picked up the new seal this afternoon, trimmed up a couple pieces of walnut, stuck it in the vise, and Viola......

Now that we have this annoying deck finished, I'm hoping to actually get some wrenching time in....

And I know it’s supposed to do this, but it still gives me a warm fuzzy when just before I placed the timing cover I aligned the dimples on the timing gears to put it at TDC. Stuck the harmonic balancer in place and got this...

Sorta pitiful when I get excited when stuff just does what it’s supposed to....

If it runs half as good as it looks you will be in great shape.

I think the AMC gods were smiling upon me today - either that it I've repeated the intake gasket install so many times lately I'm getting the knack of it. The first time I replaced it it thoroughly kicked my butt. Had to add a couple bends on either side to get it to just barely stay in place, and speeding thru the RTV application made for a frustrating effort. The second try went better after CJ told me to not use RTV but Copper Coat....... the stuff works great, but I still had the reshape the stupid thing to get it to stay put. This time, I don't know what happened. Gave it a slight bend, a couple nice light coats of gasket spray, let it dry to tack for a couple minutes, and laid it right down where it's supposed to go. Snapped right in and stayed like a well trained dog.

Dropped the intake in place, no wrestling, cussing, or jumping up and down on the intake the get the bolts in place. Scary easy.....

Tomorrow will be oil pan, valve cover, and carb install, then add distilled water and verify its not leaking...

Sorry didn't mean to jinx you.

Alrighty then....... after posting that last pic of my progress for the day I started gathering stuff for tomorrow afternoon. Gotta get a jug of oil, have the priming tool ready, distributor is patiently awaiting its placement, then the upper pully , fan, radiator, starter, battery and tray, and all the dang electrical connections and a few radiator hoses. In looking over current status, I noticed this:

Made me say a couple naughty words....... I’m thinkin a new one is easier than removing that one intact. Then I had to laugh....... I shoulda bought stock in Advance Auto before I started this project years ago......

But for now, I’m going to shower, have a snack, then have a “small goals met” beverage.....

That's pretty funny, I don't know how you even did it. And I see you still have the crappy horse shoe clip on your coil. You need to lose it.

I had the belts hanging loose when I started the reassembly. The steering shaft was the first thing to go back in..... right thru the stoopid belt. Oh, well....

And the horse shoe clamp will go away when I get around to replacing the coil. I have no idea how old it is, and I painted it black cause it poked like :dung:.
