Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
That thought occurred to me - and this is gonna sound dumb - but these keys are AMC blanks.....

Need a key cylinder?

That would be great

Worked on the steering wheel a bit today. I had to add small filler blocks to the back side of the half - the spokes are welded on the back of the outer ring, so they sit lower on the back side, so that left a gap between the spoke and the upper half.

No big deal..... Got that straightened out, then ran both halves across the router table with a round over bit. Its REALLY hard to show the shape now....

It's not quite there, but the router got it pretty dang close. Decided to go ahead and remove the overhang at the spokes -

would have looked better with em but they would have gone lower than the bend - I think this will work fine. It's also a bit larger in cross sectional diameter than I had planned..... but it's comfortable already.....

Anxious to get it glued up so I can get to sanding and finishing. And finger grooves......

I just went thru this and realized it's a little outta order. A beer will fix that LOL

That's coming along great! Now you've got me thinking about all the woodworking tools in the shop that haven't been used in years.

What glue and what are you using for the finish ?

The initial glue up for each half was with Titebond II. Gluing the halves together and to the steering wheel core will be with Brownell’s Acraglas. I use it to bed rifle receivers to the stock, and it’s pretty damn tough stuff. I have a few more small spots to hit with sandpaper then it’ll be time for the final gluing......

Got the finger notches cut. Spent a few minutes trying to decide exactly what I wanted em to look like, then applied a dose I'd don't care and just cut em.

Started by marking where they went - no way I'd be able to maintain spacing without em, so I marked every inch.

Then, on to rasping. This walnut was so old and dry it cut fast - except the heavily figured portions - that was like cutting concrete.

Only took maybe an hour and a half to get em all cut in, then hit everything with some 220 grit pape

Once that half was done (except for final sanding) I epoxied the front side to the wheel. That was last night. Today the back side will be epoxied and clamped - so it should be ready for final sanding tonight. Just might get a coat of linseed oil on this weekend.....

Folks are gonna see that and won't believe it was home made. Love it!

Well - it’s done. Glues the other half in place. Hopefully I didn’t miss any spots with the epoxy. Won’t know till tomorrow, but I think it’s gonna work [emoji106]. I just hope I used enough clamps

LOL - Well, being that most of the material had been cut away, and a groove inlet into both, they were a little flexible...... After I got started, I sorta became a challenge to see how many I could stick on there

You need more clamps lol
