Ok - After some processing time, and a beer, and some thinking..... and some more internet, I'm ready to call this an intake gasket failure due to stupidity. Ran across an Edelbrock Performer intake installation sheet, and it clearly states:

The valley pan gasket I used. Brand new. These, not at all

So it appears I installed the intake without the gaskets - just the valley pan. The little voice in my head said something wasn't right, so I should have listened. I have everything removed but the carb, so I'm about ready to start pulling the intake. Pain in the arse, but not insurmountable. We'll find out soon enough.

If yer gonna be dumb, ya better be tough. Or rich.

The valley pan is the gasket (it's called a valley pan gasket actually.)
You cannot use the valley gasket and the soft fiber gaskets together. It's one or the other, not both.
The fiber gaskets are really made for short term use but may last for a while.
The valley pan gasket is for street long term use (factory gasket is a valley pan gasket.)
The valley pan gasket also acts as a heat shield.

How did you install the gasket? What sealant and where did you use it?
 
I know it’s called a valley pan gasket - which is why I used it by itself. I guess a stock AMC 304 would never reference the others. When I installed it, I dry fit it first noticing the small “tabs” that held it in the coroner holes. Took it out, went around each opening with high temp gasket RTV, both sides, and quickly set in place, then placed the intake. It always bothered me since you can’t see under the intake after bolting it down.

The edelbrock instructions says the other gaskets are required - and since this is an Edelbrock intake I assumed their instructions were correct. Now I’m confused.....

I found my source of confusion. The screenshot of the Edelbrock install instructions shows a much older revision than they post on their website.

So, I just need to pull the intake, clean everything, and reseat the gasket and intake, following the updated instructions.

Nope - not yet. Will be working days this summer. I’m going to pick up a New valley pan gasket tonight on gas the one in there isn’t useable. Should be, but ya never know. And after doing some looking, I realize I’m supposed to have an intake valley heat shield attached to the underside of the intake. I don’t. And finding one is harder than winning the lottery. So I think after I get the intake off, I’ll make a shield just for the PCV valve to prevent oil sucking....

Also, on the Edlebrock intake you don't use the front and rear rubber seals. A generous amount of RTV silicone is used. If you try to use the rubber gaskets, they will just "squish" out from the manifold, and you will have one heck of a leak.
 
Funny story - when I did this the first time I just used what came with the valley pan gasket - both rubber end seals went on beautifully, never tried to squish out, and never leaked. Dumb luck. Will be using RTV this time

That's exactly how it should work, except I always put a glob of RVT where the seal meets the head and intake. ;)

A few days ago you asked about Protect All. I used it for the first time and I really like it. It gives the top a very slick finish, but is not sticky to attract dust. It just fills in all the little pores in the fabric. While the instructions say it is a cleaner, it works better if the top is already clean. A little goes a long way. Mike, mdeluca, recommend it a while back. Thanks Mike!

Shum8, you are a freakin genius. I started reading your build thread Sunday after and couldn't stop. That steering wheel is amazing and I the shift knobs are awesome. (Do people still say awesome?) I just started tearing down my YJ and plan to go back with CJ7 front sheet metal. I hope mine comes out half as nice as yours has. If you get near Greensboro NC, holler. I'd love to see your Frankenjeep.
