Anyone besides me entertain themselves by doing stupid stuff? After having turned my AMC 304 into a large, AMC Blue coolant storage vessel, I've been mulling the cause around in my head. Had decided that it had to be the valley pan gasket...... Popped the intake off this evening, and I mean "popped". It let go of the valley pan gasket as if I had sprayed it with a release agent.

I thought I used a copper high temp sealant - can't remember. But whatever it was, it didn't stick to the gasket at all..... hoping this was the source of the flood. Here comes the stupid part..... got to look in around in the valley, and saw this

I thought "HOLY SHIZNIT"! The valve guide are coming out!!!! I tapped on one lightly - sounded like it was connected to the block.... wondered how the heck I was gonna seat em back down. Then it hit me - those weren't valve guide coming out, but rod tappers...... then I felt really stupid..... again.

So now I'll clean off all the dang orange , and degrease immensely, and use the correct sealant. We'll see....

If it makes you feel any better, I just broke $112 of rare left hand thread bolts off inside my differential because I didn't realize they were left hand thread.

Alrighty - tomorrow the valley pan gasket goes back in, followed by stickin all the rest of the back on the engine. Would have done all this a couple days ago, but the last several days have been nuts. That, and the fact I realized the heat shield / PCV oil shield was not on the bottom of the intake. Hasn't been since I've had it. Thought about scroungin one up, but figured all I really needed to cover was the PCV valve. Looked around for something to make it out of..... after a couple hours of diggin, rootin, and fussin, it occurred to me I had the perfect material....

The old pan gasket would make a fine donor. Made a paper template for shape and hole location

Transferred the outline to the pan gasket - Even incorporated the drain in the new shield.

Drilled the three mounting holes out to accept #12 sheet metal screws, and in the process of "threading" the holes, I broke the head off of one of the screws with only a 1/16th or less proud of the surface. Stainless bugs me when it does that. Tried easy outs - no joy. Said screw it and attached the guard with two screws and loctite.

Well, it’s a good news / bad news day. Good news - intake went back in without a hiccup. Better than I expected.

Bad news - just to confirm the intake gasket was the issue, I reconnected all the hoses, and started filling the radiator with water. About a gallon and a half in it started running back out of the oil pan. Sooooo, doesn’t look like the intake gasket was the issue. I made no noise like a thrown rod, and everything in the top of the block looked good.

I can’t decide whether to drop the oil pan or pull the timing belt cover first

Had to move the daughter unit to Charlotte, NC today - packed the truck yesterday and drove down this morning. Over the last couple days, I had two very knowledgeable folks tell me I blew a head gasket (and I have a related joke later...). I just never could wrap me head around how a bit over a gallon of water could get all the way up to the head from the lower radiator hose.

But it did.

Compression showed two cylinders at 155 psi, three at AMC 150 , two at 147, and one at 0.

So now I have a plan........ New head gaskets. Now, by a show of hands, how many think I was a total idiot for not doing the head gaskets when I had the engine out and on a stand?? I’ll go first [emoji113]

Well - better the head gasket than a pushrod stuck they a water jacket. Or a big ol crack in the timing chain cover.

A service station so he turned around and pulled in. After explaining the symptoms, the mechanic told his to take his wife across the street and let her browse some of the local stores and come back in a couple hours. While the wife was in the jewelry store, he wandered over to the drug store, had an ice cream cone, then went to check on any progress. As he walked in the service bay, the mechanics looked up, said “Hey, looks like you blew a seal!”. Old guys wipes his mouth and says “nah - just had ice cream”
