my buddy towes his sammi with a 96 cherokee 4.0 with no problems. i dont see a CJ5 being much heavier than a sammi.

I don't think i would trust the weight of the CJ behind the Cherokee, though

That's what happens when you don't read from the start:doh:
No you could not do that and feel safe!
I tow mine behind a chev hd duramax with a camper and it tows easily but you know it's there when you have to get on the brakes hard.

I don't have any #'s handy but my guess is a CJ is a fair amount heavier than a Sammurai
As I alluded to previously braking would be the iffy part, also consider your tow vehicle would be loaded down with people and gear.

Pull a steel tandem with dual axle proportional electric breaks with my v8 Mountaineer (towing package - pulls like a mule) when ever needed - won't tow heavier then a CJ for distances - have brought back a Wagoneer once for parts (260 miles)... Was not a real fun day! :)

I will never tow without brakes on the trailer - even the Dodge Cummings Dueely we tow the boat with has trailer brakes - it just makes life so much safer for a small amount of cash (IMHO).

I'm not real keen on saving my life, but others I care for (or even strangers) - always!

^^^what he said^^^
you can probably move a load with a pinto but that don't mean you can stop it with one. stopping is more important than going. i pull my 15ft runabout around with my cj with manual brakes its not the best in the world but it does ok. if it weren't safe i wouldn't do it.

You know, add up a $1,000 - $3,000 trailer (low side), $5,000 and up for a CJ, $10,000 and up for a normal tow rig - is spending $175 for a good proportional brake controller and $800 for a couple of hubs and drums (BTW - That is on the MOST EXTREME high side of the figure) not worth it? Check out these retrofits -->> http://www.southwestwheel.com/store/c-30-elec-brake-assemblies.aspx Sure you need the correct flanges, hubs and such - but it is still a good investment. :)

These are my - thoughts - not sure if they worth much now days! :)

I've got an adjustable brake controler on my truck, I turn it down when I go down the gravel road to my house so the trailer brakes don't lock up.
All I can say is that if I forget to turn it back up when I hit the blacktop I know it at the first stop sign.
I would never tow my jeep without trailer brakes.

Me either, call me safe, but call me! :chug:

i can get the brake controller at work and i get 20% off so if i get a trailer ill get that.

Some trailers come with a surge brake instead of elect. brakes and although simpler and does not requirre a controler they do tend to be pretty lousy at backing up-especially uphill.

only trailer i ever pulled with surge brakes, weighed in a 9,000 lbs loaded and had a pin you put in the hitch when you needed to back, but overall they worked pretty good

They do work good and maybe better than elec. I had a boat trailer that had them with disc brakes and was pretty sweet untill you wanted to back up the slightest grade then you had to disco the quick connect on the brake line.
