If you want a good trailer that will last, stay away from the "travel trailer turned into a flatbed" deals. The frame on those are not nearly strong enough to haul much more than a couch without major, major (I mean rebuilding the entire frame) work.

Don't believe me? get under any camper and look at the sub structure. Mostly a frame of 2 main rails of 3" channel and a bunch of 2" angle outrigging. Great for people walking on the plywood floor, but not so great for a 3000+ Lb. vehicle.

This was another thought that I had, but have not seen the chassis of one, which was my major concern. I am no where near ready for one, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to look. Thanks for the insight on it though.

16' loboy, tilt bed, $1050 new
02 Dodge 250, $25K+ new
12 hour drive with A/C and cruise control - priceless

Now the problem here is not what you need/want, but how to get it past the spouse. As noted earlier, it is easier to gain forgiveness than permission, but there may be some pain associated. In 49+ years of marriage, I have faced that dilemma many times. In the above mentioned purchase, I just did it, suffered through the "why did you do that" questions, the (thank you) silent treatment, and, finally, the 'can son/daughter borrow your trailer so they can move' redemption. Of course, I can say all this because my bride is completely computer illiterate and has no idea what I'm doing on here.

thats a perfect setup you got there.

when i get to the point that i want to tow my jeep instead of drive it im goin for one of the old military chevy pickups with a diesel. i know it don't have the greatest motor but i still want one. built like a tank, 4x4, dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear, pure chevy badass-ness. throw on a turbo and you'll have a stout truck for cheeeeeeeaaaap

Well, Dalefan, it's not perfect, but it works. Really wish it had brakes on the trailer. And some better tie down points.
Had to make a panic stop with about a ton of mulch on the trailer awhile back, and there was definitely a pucker factor.

Wait...You have a 3/4 ton truck towing a relatively light trailer (mine is close to yours), and you had trouble stopping with a ton of mulch??? there is something wrong there, and its not the lack of trailer brakes! I'd look over the truck brakes, or you really had the load on the trailer wrong (btw, can I ask why you load the CJ on backwards? do you like it better that way?).
For comparison, I tow mine with a 1/2 ton Durango SUV (rated about 7400 Lbs CVWR IIRC) and I tow all manner of things with it, sometimes wayy over what it should have on it. The only time I ever had a braking problem was towing a full size '68 F100 down a long hill with 2 stoplights. Brake fade made me run the second light (boy was that fun!) BTW, I have never had a working brake setup on the trailer when towing with the Durango (no controller installed). They did work when I had my F-350, tho! LOL
Here is one of my typical loads... a 14' in bed camper unit I brought nearly AMC 150 miles on the interstate.

Oh yea here is one towing the Jeep to a race day...

Sorry for the light Hijack, Dalefan. But to bring it back on topic, Once you get used to having it around, a trailer will be one of your most used tools. Even if your not the one using it!

Well, it was one of those situations where I really wasn't paying enough attention. Running along about 65, downhill, and all of a sudden everything in front of me was brake lights and I was a little closer than I should have been. Dang sure woke me up. The truck handled it fine, not sure how much 4 yards of pine bark mulch weighs.
As for loading the jeep backwards on the trailer - it's about a 1/4" clearance problem. The trailer is a tilt, but the front shackles come up against the bed before the front tires hit the ramp to tilt it. Backing it on the trailer works with no problem, and puts the engine weight over the axles. I've pulled it that way to and from Big Bend NP (12 hour drive each way) twice with no problem, hitting 75-80 on the Interstate.

i think if i got one right now id being using it to put all my packed stuff on. she isnt buying it lol.

is the Jeep a daily driver? What are the other family vehicles involved?

not a daily driver. i have a 03 accord and the wife has a 00 civic.

It sounds to me like you need a more family friendly vehicle, that can haul all the kids, plus camping gear, and, just by happenstance, has the towing ability for your Jeep. Mid 90's suburbans can be had fairly cheap :D

i agree. she keeps crying when she goes shopping with the kids she has to jam the kids in and all the stuff she buys. sometimes she takes my car cause you can fit like 5 dead bodies in the trunk. dont ask how i know that lol. just kidding.

hey mid to late 90's grand cherokees can be had cheap to with v8s and 4x4.

i was thinking that. but i have a problem with newer mopars. they always break. i love their old muscle cars but not a fan of anything newer. remember i work at a parts store and deal with garages all day. so i know what to stay away from and what to get. one thing about older chevys is if they do break they are cheap to fix. my wife did always want a fully load grand cherokee though.

wouldn't buy new again older is better in my book just hate them computers

My wife had a 95 Cherokee 4 door 4wd w/4.0 and that got us bye back then pretty well, we had a roof rack and we would load us and the 2 boys + 100lb. labrador and tow a tent trailer and go anywhere.
They can be had pretty cheap nowadays, and when you get tired of it you could rob the 4.0 motor for your CJ.
