So I bought this 1986 CJ7 2.5L. It had a small engine fire. I rewired it and it still wouldn't start. Did a Nutter Bypass and fired right up. I then discovered the reason for the fire was the serious oil blowby. I pulled the motor , tore it down and found that #2,#3 cyclinders / pistons had broken rings. I replaced all rings, bearings, block honed, valves hand lapped. Put it all back together .

I got the motor put back in and can't get it started. I have gasblowing out of the top of the carb. All spark plugs are firing and the distributor is on with pistons.

Could the cam be off by a half turn or so from crank ?

If you lined up the timming marks on the timming chain when you installed it it's either right on or 180 out. I have never heard of gas blowing out of the carb. If seen fire shooting out which is the timming being off.

I pulled the motor, removed the timing chain cover, both gears and the chain. I scrubbed it down in some strong parts cleaner and found a small round circle on each. Spoke with our mechanics and that would be the timing marks, not the key on the crank or the pin on the cam. That's probably why it won't start.

For everyone having the same trouble I am attaching pictures. I also used a silver paint pen to highlite the marks.

I got the thing put back in today. It fought me alot. Up and down on the engine hoist, up and down on the floor jack for the Transmission /Transfer Case . Had to add another strap and lift the front of the motor. I tripped, fell against my jeep and the Transmission came off of the jack, motor turned and fell into place. wtf.
Oh well it's in.

Gonna try and get some stuff hooked up after tv tonight.

Isn't working on these fun. Glad you got in in.

everything is hooked up. I hit the key and nothing. put it on the
b*attery charger, Let it go for a few , hit the key andi t just buzzed.

I guess I'll check my starter and battery.

Sounds like a low battery or a bad connection somewhere. The "Buzz" should be the starter relay.

just went and looked at the battery and the connections, the insulation on the wire going from the starter solonoid to the starter has some melting from it getting hot. the solonoid still just buzzes when I hit the starter. I'm not sure what to do. Maybe when it warms up Saturday I'll pull the starter and check it. Maybe even see if I can get the fly wheel to move in case I f'ed something up and the motor is frozen.

replaced the solanoid today and put it on the battery charger. It turned over but not enough power to make it start. I guess I'll get a new battery in the morning and see what happens. I'm hoping she fires right up. It's been a year since I started this project.:chug:

Im hoping so also. Keep an eye out on the wiring where it got hot and melted the insulation. ;)

Battery worked. I had to adjust the distributor a little and she fired right
up. I just need to replace the dash and rewire some gauges and I'll be ready to go topless
:chug:

had to replace my dash because the old dash pad leaked and rusted the dash. Got a different one , filled in some spots with plastic, sanded and all painted up.

My Fuel, temp and oil gauges don't work. I found that the power to all of them is not working. Replaced the fuses and no joy. I hooked up a power and ground from the battery/body and the oil works.

No signal from the fuel sending unit. I really don't want to drop my dank and replace the sending unit.

Any thought?
