I thought I understood. I want to time at full advance. Here is where I am. As I rotate dizzy clockwise, the numbers increase on the timing cover and balancer. Going from o to 20. This is advancing correct? Lets say I'm at 20, this would be 20 atdc. From what I read, I want 32 Btdc at full advance. If I rotated the dizzy that far counter clockwise it would knock and die. On my balancer, do I measure to the left or right to 34 degrees? Do I mark clockwise from factory notch on balancer or counter clockwise from factory notch.

I believe your full distributor advance comes in around 2000 rpm. Looking at the degrees registered on the dampner it will be on the left side of the tdc marker.

Ok, I'm on the right path then. I measured from o-10 and got 1 1/8. So 1.125x3.5=3.9. So I measure from the notch to the left or counter clockwise 3.9 inches. I think my problem is to find what rpm is full advance.

The timing card in the pic is valve timing not ignition relevant but not at this point.

34 above top dead center at 3000 rpm turn off motor it will die instantly then wait 5 0r 10 seconds it will start right back up . It should not diesel at all . My amc 360 is timed at 32 degrees above top dead center at 3000 rpms , I do not have the vacume advance hooked up at all ..

Yes going from 0 to 20 is advancing If you were retarding it it would die long before you got that far. And if you are getting pinging you need to back it off until it doesn't ping. I am assuming your saying knock you mean you are getting pinging.

Yeah. I know you gave me the formula, but does 3.9 inches sound right? It ran like a top till 2400 then popping and such beyond. Is there a way I can do this alone. Pull the throttle till I see advance stop., then spin till I get to my dot adjusting throttle as needed. Not exact, but will this method get me ballpark to get it tuning on the road. Side note, wouldn't restart without standing on it.

No,no,no,no. I need to mark the balancer to the right of the notch. As I advance, by the time the new mark hits tdc the actual mark will be at 35 technically. From here, I would adjust throttle down, then get the mix screws
