Quick question maybe even a dumb one.... is it ok to use a tow bar and drag quadra track behind a pickup???? thanks in advance

I'm quadra trac challenged but per my 78 owners manual. Without range reduction you must disco driveshafts, with range reduction shift into neutral with Transmission in park and do not tow with emergency drive control on or in low range.

This is a good question about all jeeps I have a 86cj7 T-176 Dana 300 and what would be the best way to tow it. Remove the drive shafts or just put everything in neutral. I live in southeast Missouri and most of the good off road parks and trails are 100 miles plus away plus if some thing does happen I'll have the truck to go get parts.

My quadra trac has the lever in the floor board I'm guessing thats the range reduction that your talking about, mine also has locking hubs I belive that a PO added what Busadave9 called a part time kit, I'm still not sure if its ok to tow the jeep

Sorry Sasquach I missed your article on flat land, thanks for all the info I was afraid that I would have to disconnect the drive lines

just towed my 5 1000 miles from okc to pensacola, its not a QuadraTrac but i will offer this piece of advice, you must....must make sure that the wheel lock will not engage while towing, only a real problem in parking lots and gas stations where you will turn tight but i found that unhooking the battery and leaving the ignition in the run position while towing kept this problem at bay.

Here is what I have been told about flat towing a CJ with a Dana 300 .

1. Make sure the key cylinder is unlocked so that the wheel can turn freely to avoid damage to the column.

2. If towing a short distance approx. 8 miles or so shift the tc into N.

3. If towing for longer distances remove the driveshafts as damage to the Dana 300 can occur.

Just what I was told by a buddy in Mobile that has been restoring/parting/loving cjs for over 20 years so I do as he says.

what do you think would be the least for a tow vehicle? could it be done with say an XJ and that currie set up?

I did it with a 4cyl 5sp Tacoma pre-runner

got with a club but the events are far from me and my cj tears through gas and shes not no highway star so have been toying with this option. would have to sell m back up car for a tow rig like a xj or something...thanks:D

Ideally you want something that weighs more than what you are towing.

I'm curious as to why when you're flat towing a QT with low range, if you put the case in neutral, why would you put the automatic in anything but neutral on the off chance the QT falls out of neutral?

yep why not put the tranny and tc in nuetral, you never know what could happen and it only takes an extra second.

Ive drug my 7 back and forth from the midwest to the west coast flat towing several times.

Biggest caveat I can provide, when on the interstate, when you are exiting the interstate, slow down before you turn into the curve of the ramps. I was towing with a 2000 Silverado 1500 cab and half short box 4x4.

There is kinetic energy behind you that wants to travel straight when you are wanting to turn (only a problem about lets say around 40mph and up). Youll find if you dont slow down, you are flirting with a jack knife situation.

I knew the potential was there, but was surprised how hard the CJ was pushing my back side in corners, and those P/Us dont have much in the way of weight in the back.

Yes, the column was unlocked allowing my jeeps front tires to follow me, but they are little delayed as you start into the corner.

Just a personal opinion, Id never flat tow a jeep with anything that weighs less than 5k. I was really not comfortable with a half ton full size V8 4x4.

I now tow with a Ford Super Duty with a diesel, now I fly down the road, without being nervous, HP to spare, plenty of weight and brakes, and get better MPG. :driving: I can even do smokey burn outs with jeep in tow ! Although I have no complaints with the silverado, it served me well.

gas mileage? i didnt fly in the tacoma but i got 15 towing the jeep, a little over a 6mpg loss over no load condition. like everyone has said too. caution is key.

I don't know what you mean... You mean you agree on neutral and neutral or you mean neutral and neutral is stupid?

Bump. Anyone?
