Trans skid plate

Hi I have a 78 CJ5 V8 (AMC 360) and had to take the skid plate off to finish my in chassis exhaust ... first I noticed there were 1" spacers between the frame and skid plate ... I had a 75 CJ5 AMC 304 many many years ago and I can't remember if there were spacers between the skid plate and the frame .... This CJ has and my neighbors CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .. the skid plate is bolted to the frame... so question .. is this a v8 vs 6 thing or was it added for the 4" lift ..
it was a spring lift and not a body lift

You didn’t state what Transmission you have. If a T-18 the spacers are required. If the 3 speed T-150 then not, but if you lift the jeep then to lower the Transfer Case by lowering the skid plate helps with the rear driveline angle.

most every one I have seen with 3+" lift has had spacers in it... I have them in mine (4" lift)
