Transmission Help

Transmission Help
When I installed it I used a "universal" Dexron III ATF. Some AMC forums said that is what I should use. I pulled the pan and the filter was kinda gross so I replaced the filter and filled it back up with fluid and it seems to be working fine. I am not sure when I can get it back down to Phoenix to have that shop look at it. I am wondering if a dirty filter and maybe some air pockets made it lose all gears.

This Transmission was built in 2016 and sat in a garage for a little over a year before I got it. I called the Transmission shop that built it and they said that I likely had a valve sticking due to it sitting for so long. They recommended buying Lube-Guard and adding it to the fluid to loosen everything up.

Did they specify which of the Lube-Guard tranny products to use?

A dirty filter will definitely do it

Don't you find it strange a freshly built Transmission would have a dirty filter?

I added the red Lube Guard and have put about 50 miles on the jeep and so far everything is going well! Fingers crossed that it was just a sticky valve.

Ya need to have a hard word with the outfit you got that tranny from..........

After pulling the pan it looks like the PO stored the Transmission dry. There was some surface rust in the bottom of the pan and that is what appeared to be on the filter (along with some fibrous material). I am going to run the current cheapo fluid with the lube guard for about 500 miles and then pull the pan and look at the filter and do a flush with Amsoil full synthetic. My local Transmission guy said its possible that the first usage of the Transmission caused it to shed some clutch material and that so long as its good when I look at it again that all should be well.

Where you live-You would do well to install a separate tranny cooler. ;)

So far the jeep seems to be doing great. I like where I have the shift points and it has nice firm shifts. I ordered a temp gauge so I can keep an eye on things. Thanks for everyone's help! On to the next problem!

I have noticed a new problem since I have been driving the jeep with the new Transmission . I dont know how long the issue has been there since I only notice it on the highway and I rarely put the jeep on the highway. When I release the gas to slow down in 3rd gear there is a brief squealing noise. Its sounds like a bad pulley bearing or something but I can't pinpoint it. It goes away when you get back on the gas and it only does it at highway speeds in 3rd gear.

Is this coming from the tranny?
Have you ck'd the engine belts for tightness?

The serpentine appears to be tight. I cant tell where the sound is coming from because it is so brief and it only occurs at speed moving down the highway. Given that the Transmission was such a recent change I feared it might be it.

The noise ended up being the driveline vibration causing the gears in the Dana 300 to chatter. I installed a double cardan and it solved the problem! The new issue I have is front driveshaft clearance. We went wheeling this weekend and I found out that under moderate flex, the front driveline hits the pan on the 727. I thought that with a 4" suspension lift and Transfer Case drop I would clear just fine, but with some articulation it hits below where the dipstick tube goes in. I am still kicking around ideas to solve this so let me know if you have any. So far all I can think of is cuting some 2x2x1 aluminum pucks to raise the engine up an inch.

Would a narrower dia DS, reduce this contact?
LG

A YJ front driveshaft is quite a bit smaller diameter. Not sure if it Would be long enough. Worst case, you could use the YJ ends to make a new one.

So I attempted to recreate the problem in my garage with multiple jacks and wood blocks. No luck. Could I massage the pan a bit in the area it’s hitting? See the attached photo.
