Hey everyone so as i started to build the cj thinking id end up buying another car I've fallen in love with the cj and it is now my daily driver. My idea is that i want the engine/ ignition system working like a new car, to be able to start the engine first time every time without having to give it gas or play with it as well as being able to start cold with ease. Im running a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a decent number of miles on it with a weber 32/36 that could probably use a tune up.

Upgrades: Electronic ignition/msd 6a series control module/ team rush upgrade.
If anyone can help me out would be greatly appreciated might help quite a few people out

Zac, if it is not running right you should figure out whether it is a carb or ignition issue. Right off hand I would think you have carb problems.

If you want it to start without having to pump the gas pedal to start it, and just turn the key and have it act like the new vehicles, you are pretty much talking throttle body or some type of EFI. Pricey for the I6 at around $1500 to $1800, but you have pretty much what the new vehicles have. I know Summit racing carries a setup. Unless you have a 4 barrel carb on it now, you would probably have to add the price of a new intake manifold also.

What mrplaybass said. Before fuel injection and completely computerized engines/vehicles ALL vehicles needed to have the choke and high idle set by depressing the gas pedal, then several pumps for the accelerator pump to prime the engine. $50 to $1 million dollar cars needed the same thing. We all did it, non of us thought about doing it, it wasn't a chore, it was a way to connect to your own car. Some took 3 pumps, some took 1, others you pumped the hell out of. The summer routine was different from the winter routine. Your car wasn't simply a machine, it was your friend of sorts, you were connected. Sometimes it was enjoyable to watch someone else try to start YOUR car and couldn't do it. Then you jump in diddle this, pump that, hit the starter and the thing fires right up. Today nobody would notice a tiny victory like that, well that is if their "friends" didn't put up a video on facebook or tittler or some other phone ape. I do miss the old days.

:laugh: You sure are dating yourself Hedge! Thanks for the trip down memory lane :chug:

hedgehog, i love where your head is at and i feel completely the same way just wanted to make sure someone else hasn't figured something out that i haven't. does anyone have a good write up on tuning the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and weber 32/36 they're probably just a little bit out of tune. i do have a timing gun and i was the one who installed the distributor and ignition system. i don't have any vacuums leaks currently went spraying around with starting to fluid. so my next step is getting the timing down and the carb tuned up. thanks for calls help!

i also have another quick question i was doing the team rush upgrade today and the rotor when i took off the cap wasn't pointing at cylinder one. but the jeep was running before this do i just put the rotor on the way the other one was?

You really don't have a choice, the rotor goes in one location/orientation. If you pull the dist. you have options on where the rotor points. For instance DUI dist. on AMC V8's with power steering often can't be timed due to interference with the pump. I jumped one tooth to move the timing location (the rotor doesn't point at the #1 cylinder) clockwise.

Unfortunately there really isn't anything practical you can do to make a carbed engine start like a FI engine......short of creating an ether injection system on the top of the carb....hhmmmmm

The Weber carbs tend to come from the factory over-jetted. You can purchase a jet kit and go down in size. These carbs are also pressure finicky. A pressure regulator is also recommended.

My propane system is the closest to fuel injection you can get....but it takes some cranking none the less. once however, the fuel reaches the carb, it starts immediately.

thanks y'all, I'm glad i know where to come when i have a question. finished up the rush upgrade definitely runs better.

You and me both, brother! The danged EPA has done about took all the fun out of playing with vehicles. Most of the new ones even look alike, no matter who manufactured 'em.
