What did you do to or with your CJ today?
Exactly what I am talking about. Did a lot of that up in PA a few weeks ago. Seems to be the regular thing up there. And if I plan to do that often with my CJ, I thought I might as well put the switch in. Even if I hardly ever use it.

Pretty regular. Its a nice option to have for sure. I just put a brand new radiator in Vickis Laredo . I can fit my hand in between the stock set up and the radiator. How much clearance did you have with the stock set up? The water pump and clutch fan are both on the way out as well. May be the right time to convert myself.

My stock set up had the fan clutch so close to the radiator that I could not fit a finger between. Which is what caused all of my problems. I don't have room with this set up either but the fan won't bump the radiator now.

I wonder why yours was so tight. I noticed you said you had the grille off multiple times so I assume the bottom mount was ok. Adjusting the grill supports really would only move the upper portion of the grill out. Im

I know. The grill is mounted with the side and bottom bolts in the normal locations. And the engine is mounted on the frame where they appear they should go. It is a bit odd. But it could be a factor of the glass body, but that would not explain the bottom mount for the grill. So i am at a loss.

Greased all the stuff I degreased when I had the steering and the front hubs apart.

Then discovered that my front diff must be shot. No 4wd on the driver's side, even after fixing the hub. :(

So when you turn the tire when it's in the air the axle shaft isn't turning? Or how did you come to the conclusion that that side isn't working?

In 4wd low, hubs turned in, Transmission in gear.

Jack up passenger side, leaving driver's side on the ground, and the wheel won't turn.

Jack up driver's side, leaving the passenger side on the ground, and it freewheels. :(

I can hear both hubs clicking in when the gears line up as I turn the wheels in the air, and the sliding gears move easily and don't bind up (at least when I test-fitted them during reassembly).

The snap ring inside the hub was missing on that side. I have read that with some axles, this will allow the axle to creep in and break something in there. :(

I thought maybe I hadn't put it back together correctly, but I took apart the other side and verified that I'd put both hubs back together the same way, so... I guess the next step is to open up the diff and see what horrors are to be revealed.....

Oh well. I was rather expecting it to be something of a money pit until I got everything sorted out...

Hmmmm, could be differentiating. Try this, jack up both front wheels. Turn in the hubs. turn one wheel, the other should turn in the opposit direction. Do the same on the other side. Have someone hold one wheel and see if the other will turn, then do the opposite on the other side.

Polecat, is the axle turning?

With it in the air you should be able to see the axle, hub unlocked turn wheel axle shouldn't turn lock hub turn wheel axle should turn. That will tell you if the hub is working.

Yeah, the spindle is turning. Not 100% sure if the rest of it is.

Oddness, though. I'd think if the diff had bombed, both sides would be broken. Maybe it's the knuckle or the axle shaft.

Hopefully I'll be able to get back to the shop tomorrow night and pull some more things apart and get to the bottom of it. I had to button it back up and have a beer the other night when I discovered the problem. Sanity check, you know. ;)

Today I primed and painted the bottom side of my 7 frame (temporary frame)let dry then flipped it right side up and wire wheeled and Ospho`d it (phosphoric acid, dichromate, wetting agent & extender). Will start a 1981 CJ7 Laredo build thread on a budget later, since I have been taking pictures.

Pulled the Transmission /Transfer Case out because third gear keeps popping out. Opened it up and everything looked good. Need to put it back in. Rebuild it next year.

Painted the top of my 7 temporary frame, after emailing Turbogus, and discussing T-18 `s, took mine apart to remove the Oregon Paint (aka surface rust) and a spider that crawled in the vent, resealed and oiled. Took more pictures of extra parts (aka for sale parts). In the process of digging out my 44`s front & rear, to prep them.

Took apart the hub, pulled the axle, and found nothing wrong. Repacked and put everything back together, and now it magically works.

Then spent 90 minutes trying to get a wire through the castle nut on top of my steering bellcrack shaft. Gave up and had a beer instead. Gonna put a nylock nut on it instead, and then use a second one for a jam nut. That should hold it together.....

Only need a flasher module, thermostat, battery, carb base gasket, speedometer cable, e-brake adjustment, tires, underside of the tub painted up with chassiscoat to keep the rust away, and a tune-up and it'll pass inspection and be on the road. Yay.... ;)

Dug out my centered Dana 44 housing to set it up, got everything for assembling but my Power Lock side gears. May have to go stock or install with my Lock Right. When I pulled out the axles, noticed that 1 of my 3 spares had been shaved on the end by the PO of that axle, will install to see how short, if to short will cut for a PL jig (already have 1), a long punch and scrap the rest.

Never found the Dana 44 30 spline Powr-Lok side gears, setting up with stock and Lock Right, until I find or buy new ones. Can not find my 30 spline set up shafts, going to cut 3rd spare axle that PO removed 1/2" from end tomorrow. Painted Dana 44 parts, took pictures of extra parts. Got extra tilt wheel parts ready for assembly.

Had a great weekend with a buddy from Germany. Took him way up in the Okanogan National Forest above Winthrop, WA. My CJ7 performed excellent in the high altitude after making a few adjustments on the MC2150 carb.

"Round Jeep is Good Jeep"

Wire wheeled and Osphod the Transmission mount skid plate.
Assembled a tilt column, found my stainless steel plate to make a column vise mount, got the rest of my tilt parts ready for tomorrow so I can put two more together.
