What did you do to or with your CJ today?
From the PTNS owner's manual;

Drive wheel rolling-radii unequal. If the rolling-radii of the drive are unequal, the smaller rolling-radius will turn faster and will overrun the other causing the other to be the primary driving wheel. Tires with equal rolling-radii will correct this condion. Either adjust pressures or replace tires as required.

Wooly

We are not talking a bout a big pressure difference. Likely less than plus or minus 5 psi.

I've gotten lost on what started this but there's an assumption that we need to accept that is that both tires on the axle are virtually Identical. Without that assumption, we can argue over diameters and circumferences pressures all we like.

Two brand-new identical tires equally inflated should have the same diameter and thus the same circumference so neither should provide resistance to the other on an axle or create slip.

If you drop pressure in one of them, you add resistance by two factors. One factor being smaller circumference the other being more rolling resistance rolling resistance. But only the lack of circumference creates slip within the differential.

I believe that keeping each side aired equally is very important. Better for the tire, it's better for the ride, it's better for keeping it going straight down the road and it reduces slip in the differential.

Some guys use an air hose with an air chuck on both ends to place on each tire to make sure they reach equilibrium. This is the same way some semi trucks use crossfires on to single side to get both tires the same pressure and stay that way. They use one set of crossfires on each of the four corners of the rear tires. These do not affect differential slip but keep pairs identical diameters.

Think all new tires are the same diameter .... seems logical ...... actually measure a few ...... both diameter AND circumference.

Agreed. But that's part of the point I think, don't settle for tires that aren't identical. Tires are too d@&$ expensive to get a set that isn't virtually identical.

The name of this thread is "What did you do to or with your Cj today". Not "Ramble on like morons" . :)

I removed some more bolts getting closer to pulling the puked AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l out. Another Cj and the replacement AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l arrive Friday night some time. :D

morons!

Took a careful look at greasy, sand-encrusted, worn-out and clacking tierod & ends, draglink. Thought about wirebrushing, replacing tierod ends, and painting. Thought about next five days of heavy rain. Thought about RockAuto, went to their site, and ordered clean, new parts.

Ordered some parts :D
I need to get this thing back together before it gets any nicer outside

I know, right? Spring is coming on strong and fast down here in mid GA. Trees are greening up quick!

Ordered me a temporary replacement radiator for my CJ5 . Ebay strikes again! Gonna pull the original one out this evening and clean it up some and try my hand at "radiator repair". I'll let y'all know how that comes out.......

I hear ya. I was back in the garage yesterday since the temperature hit 75 yesterday. Some of the best topless driving is on the horizon. Hitting the garage again a little tonight as well
